      Mar. 29, 2023

EDWARD CHARLES WILLIAMS,  BRITISH 1807-1881-  WINTERTIME: RADLETT, MIDDLESEX;  OIL ON CANVAS LAID

      Est: £400 - £600

Edward Charles Williams,  British 1807-1881-  Wintertime: Radlett, Middlesex;  oil on canvas laid down on plywood, signed 'E. C. Williams.' (lower right), 41.2 x 29.8 cm.  Provenance:  Private Collection.  Note:  Williams was the son of Edward Williams (1781-1855) and member of the Williams family of painters, also known as the Barnes School, which included George Morland (1764-1804) and James Ward (1769-1859). Williams's output is defined by his serene yet unsentimental depictions of the British landscape. Here, the bleakness of a snowy landscape is mitigated by the cosy cottage to the right, and the suggestion of a human figure wearing red at the end of the path.

Original antique oil painting of well listed British artist Edward Charles Williams ( 1807-1887). One of pair.Edward Charles Williams was the eldest son of Edward Williams (the British landscape painter). He received his early training from his father, as can readily be seen from the similarity of their works - both painting in the same woodland style reminiscent of the early Dutch landscape artists. In the early 1840's he was living at 2, London Street - close to Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt - and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy in 1840 - A Gipsy Encampment - Moon Rising. By 1854 he had moved to Hammersmith and in 1857 his first wife, Mary Ann, died. His only child, Alice, was born a year later to a woman who had been his wife's nurse - the two did not marry for another 10 years. Williams lived in and around London for most of his life and many of his paintings feature scenes from the surrounding countryside including Kent, Surrey Sussex and Essex. He was the least prolific exhibitor of the family, but did exhibited at all the major exhibition halls, including: The Royal Academy, British Institution, Royal Society if British Artists, Institute of Fine Arts and the National Institution. Williams died on July 25, 1881. Collections Edward Charles Williams is represented in the following collections: Holburne of Menstrie Museum, Bath; Lansdowne Collection, Bowood, Wiltshire; Public Museum and Art Gallery, Hastins and Anglesey Abbey, Lode, near Cambridge, amongst others.Size: with frame 18 x 13 8/7 inches, without frame 13 1/8 x 9 3/8 inches. ~~ DEAR BIDDERS, Please View More Detailed Close-Up Images by visiting our website - Sofedesignauctions.com ~ Thank you ! ~~~~~~.
