Neil Williams 1986 collage painting ME Series #2

        Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Williams, Neil (American/Brazil 1934 - 1988), ME Series #2, 1986, collage skinned acrylic paint and splatter collage with paint brushes, 73.5 x 68 inches, signed, titled, and dated on reverse, Provenance: A Southern California Corporate Collection; John Moran Auctioneers, Auction Date: 04/16/2016, Neil Williams, a shaped-canvas pioneer in 1960s New York, evolved his early shaped color-field paintings into sculptural collages by the 1970s. The present work, from 1986, and the following lot were created using dried skins of acrylic paint. First Williams painted acrylic sections onto glass and allowed them to dry. Then he scraped up the paint skins and applied them to prepared panels in dynamic raised arrangements. Further acrylic paint applied on the surface -- along with the playful inclusion of foam paint brushes and a paint scraper in the present work -- tie the structure and the sculptural skins together into a completely abstract riot of color and texture.

Neil Williams (1934-1988 New York, NY)

        Est: $6,000 - $9,000

Vertical multi-color abstract, unsigned, acrylic and metallic paint on canvas and board, approximately: 91'' H x 36'' W x 9'' D, est: $6000/9000. Note: Neil Williams was a pioneer of the shaped canvas and continued to innovate in structure and medium throughout his career. Williams was born in Utah and graduated from the California School of Fine Arts in 1959. He was an important member of the New York art movement in the 1960s and taught and exhibited extensively in the city. The present and following work synthesize earlier explorations of surface with stylized landscape and floral elements inspired by the artist's experiences visiting Brazil (E. Leffingwell,''Sao Paulo Diary'', Art in America, January 1989, p. 56). These works, created by piecing together different painted structures, unite tropical patterning with urban hard-edge structure.

        Est: $2,000 - $3,000

Splatter paint skin abstract with foam brushes, unsigned, inscribed and dated verso: M.E. series #2 / 1986, unframed acrylic and metallic paint on panel mounted on wooden stretchers, 73.5'' H x 68'' W, est: $2000/3000. Note: Neil Williams, a shaped-canvas pioneer in 1960s New York, evolved his early shaped color-field paintings into sculptural collages by the 1970s.
