Williams 1947 PROVENANCE: Shannon's Fine Art Auctioneers, Milford, Connecticut, October 21, 1999, lot 27; ACA Galleries, New York; Private collection, New York. Born in Ogden, Utah, Raymond Hendry Williams studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the University of Wisconsin, where he earned his Master's degree. He was known to have studied under the tutelage of Alexander Archipenko, William H. Varnum, and Mabel Pearl Frazer. Primarily a painter of genre scenes and seascapes, he taught at the University of Nebraska and was a contributor to the magazine Design. His work can be found in collections throughout the United States, including the Joslyn Museum of Art in Omaha, Nebraska. Painted in 1947, The present work depicts a lively scene of jubilant dancers and musicians, which fully captures the vivaciousness of swing jazz culture. Conveying the energy, excitement and joy of the music and dancing through its complex arrangement of whirling figures and their shadows, the painting also expresses the sense of relief and the desire to enjoy life again that accompanied the end of World War II. At the same time, the imagery of the painting--the giant American flag hanging on the wall, the sailor in the center ground--makes reference to the invaluable role that African-American servicemen played in the victory of the Second World War.
