Robert Williams (Born 1943) "Rogue's Gallery Alphabet" Limited Edition Print. California artist Robert Williams trained in painting first at Los Angeles City College and later at the Chouinard Art Institute. He got his first break when he became the art director for legendary hot rod hero Ed "Big Daddy" Roth. With the rise of the counterculture in the late 1960's, Williams found a growing audience in the underground comic milieu that nurtured such figures as Robert Crumb, Victor Moscoso and S. Clay Wilson. Williams was one of the originators of Zap Comix, and in 1994 he founded Juxtapoz Art and Culture Magazine with a group of artists and collectors. The publication's mission statement was to present art that is provocative, technically adept and worthy of exposure, and the magazine has attracted broad attention to the style. In the magazine, he has claimed credit for inventing the term 'lowbrow' art. His themes are deliberately low class, involving raunchy sexual jokes, and focusing on garish, bad taste and general synicism about everything. Underlying themes are a sophisticated concern with the modern world. Perhaps his best known work is 'Appetite For Destruction' which features levels of human to robot rape, an image that was featured on a Guns and Roses album cover. Robert Folkestone Williams hand written letter with good content about his books. He was born in 1809 in London, the son of Edward Williams. He was an all-round man of letters who produced poetry, fiction, journalism, history, and biography as a result of more than thirty years severe literary labour, rarely less than ten hours a day, sometimes more. Williams wrote ten novels between 1835 and 1865, most of which treated historical subjects such as the life of Shakespeare, the English civil war, and the early eighteenth century. One novel, Sir Roger de Coverley (1846), appeared under the pseudonym Frank Ranelagh. For a time, he was Professor of Ancient and Modern History at Cavalry College, Richmond. Williams also worked as the sub-editor and later editor of the New Monthly Magazine. Through this connection, he was called in to complete Theodore Hook s Fathers and Sons (1842) and Frederick Marryat s The Little Savage (1850). He married in 1839 Rosa Lucy du Ponte, the widow of William Francis Player, and the couple had three children (in addition to two children from Rosa s first marriage). Williams died in 1870. This group of beautiful folio orchid lithographs is from Robert Warner & Benjamin Williams' Orchidaceous Plants The work was published in London by John Edward Taylor for Lovell Reeve & Co between 1862 and 1865. The lithograph available is from the first edition of the first series of Warner and Williams' beautifully illustrated large format work on orchid species.
