    Model 1840 Medical Staff Sword Named to Confederate Surgeon Dr. Thomas H. Williams Overall moderate wear to grip, pommel, handguard and scabbard, with most of gilding worn off. Solder staining on scabbard. Blade is marked W.H. Horstman & Sons, Philadelphia and has turned gray with minor pitting. Reverse shield is engraved "Dr. Thomas H. Williams". Dr. Williams resigned his Federal commission in early 1861 and was appointed surgeon in the Confederate Army and was present at First Bull Run. He was later charged with setting up most of the Confederate Hospitals in the state of Virginia. 28 1/4" blade; 35" overall. Also includes modern painting by Connie Hawkins of Dr. Williams holding the sword (23" x 18" s.s., framed to 28" x 22 1/2"). Painting is in excellent condition.
