              Wheeler Williams (1897-1972) Untitled 1947 The original sculpture, or maquette, is sculpted in terra cotta and scratch signed in the wet medium back side of the base, with a date of 1947. Two of Williams' books are included. One is inscribed to the consignor (by descent), his fellow balloonist from World War I. Wheeler Williams was a Lieutenant in America's balloon corps . Measures 11 x 14.5 x 7.5 inches. Without proof of exemption, be aware that internet sales tax applies to all Internet transactions and local sales tax may apply to local pick-up transactions.               Wheeler Williams New York, Connecticut, (1897 - 1972) Mercury #9 lead Signed, titled, and numbered. Biography from the Archives of askART: A native of Chicago, Wheeler Williams is known for his allegorical, narrative work including "Tablets to Pioneers" on the Michigan Avenue bridge in Chicago, and "Settlers of the Seaboard" in Fairmount Park in Philadelphia. He graduated with honors from Yale University in 1919 and earned a Master of Architecture degree from Harvard in 1922. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago with sculptor Albin Polasek and also studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Wheeler's sculpture won honorable mention in the Prix de Rome contest in 1922 and a gold medal at the Paris Exposition in 1937. He served as president of the Fine Arts Federation of New York, the National Sculpture Society, and in 1964 was president of the American Artist Professional League.

              Wheeler Williams: A rare lead fountain figure of Neptune titled and signed Wheeler Williams 1939, fish heads on base plumbed for water 84cm.; 33ins high Wheeler Williams (November 30, 1897 - August 12, 1972) was an American sculptor, born in Chicago, Illinois. Williams studied sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He attended Yale where he graduated Magna cum Laude in 1919. He received a Master of Architecture degree from Harvard in 1922. Williams studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Wheeler was a recipient of a Gould Medal at the Paris Exposition in 1937. He was a member of the National Academy, past president of the Fine Arts Federation of New York, and longtime president of the National Sculpture Society. Wheeler was also the founder and president of the American Artist Professional League.

              WILLIAMS, Wheeler, (American, 1897-1972): Baby Mercury Holding Staff with Foot on Arch Near Tortoise, Lead Garden Sculpture, 33 1/2" h, incised signature on base. Williams series "Childhood of the Gods" created under the auspices of Limited Editions of American Masterpieces Of Garden Sculpture, was exhibited at the New York World's Fair in 1939. Included with the sculpture is documentation from Limited Editions, 1940, outlining the purpose of the series, chaired by Mrs Theodore Roosevelt Jr. At the time this sculpture was sold, it was described as being one of the actual pieces exhibited at the World's Fair in 1939.
