      William Joseph Williams (1759-1823) A Portrait of George Washington, circa 1821 Signed "J. Williams," with the inscription "This drawing of the President was drawn by me with the consent of his Excellency from 3 sittings, 1794," pastel on paper, framed. (23 1/2 in.  x 17 1/2 in.) Provenance A private Virginia collection. Note It is believed that this portrait dates to the 19th century. William Williams, a portrait and miniature painter, was born in New York and worked in that city as well as Philadelphia, Charleston, South Carolina and Newbern, North Carolina. He is best known for his two portraits of George Washington in Masonic Regalia, one oil on canvas, the other pastel on paper. In 1821, upon converting to Catholicism, the artist changed his name to Joseph Williams. Mended tear upper left side, scattered foxing, toning

      A Pair of Portraits of a Man and Woman, Dr. Huggesford and Elizabeth Huggesford attached on reverse of woman, Elizabeth Huggesford/aged 53 years/Painted February 27th 1783 pastel on paper 203/4x143/4in. each (2) NOTES William Joseph Williams was born in New York City in 1759, where he worked as a portrait and miniature painter from 1779 to 1792. From 1793 until 1807, Williams worked in Philadelphia and as far south as South Carolina and New Bern, North Carolina, until 1807 when he returned to New York City. Williams spent the last five years of his life in New Bern, where he died in 1823. See Groce and Wallace, Dictionary of Artists in America (New Haven, 1957), p. 691.
