Acquired from the above in 1993. Collection of Dr. Douglas Holsclaw, Jr,. Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania. Frame: 14 x 17 x 2 in. The wax-lined canvas in overall fair to good condition. The surface of the canvas s ditry (specks, and yellowed varnish) and would likely benefit from a light cleaning. With paint craquelure throughout, spreading in an irregular pattern. Examination under UV light reveals minuscule, poinpoint inpainting across the center line in the sky and the upper tier of the faraway mountains (most likely past minuscule flakes), and two more sizeable repairs in the sky again at upper right corner. Careful inpainting along the ridges of the canyon at bottom left. See specialist's pictures for more details.

John Williamson American, 1826-1885 The Nervous Truant, 1861 Signed with artist's initials J.W. and dated 61. (ll) Oil on canvas 10 1/8 x 8 1/4 inches Provenance: Private collection Best known as a landscape painter, Williamson also created genre scenes in the 1850s and 1860s. Rendered at a time when school was a requirement rather than a privilege, this painting captures the universal experience of a child's anxiety and ambivalence about skipping school. Showing the school house in the background, Williamson brings the viewer into the story, leaving it open as to which way the truant will turn. The painting is in keeping with mid-century genre painting, in which narrative scenes tapped into the mixed emotions associated with changes in American society. C The Spanierman Gallery, LLC
