He was present at Balaklava on 25 October 1854, when the 93rd routed the Russian cavalry and won themselves the title of 'The Thin Red Line'. The Times correspondent, William Howard Russell, who, standing on the hills above, could clearly see that nothing stood between the Russian cavalry and the defenceless British base but the 'thin red streak tipped with a line of steel' wrote of the 93rd: 'With breathless suspense everyone awaits the bursting of the wave [of Russian Cavalry] upon the line of Gaelic rock, but ere they came within 200 yards another deadly volley flashes from the levelled rifle, and carries terror into the Russians. They wheel about, open files right and left, and fly back faster than they came. "Brave Highlanders! Well done!" shout the spectators.' Wilson subsequently proceeded with the Regiment to India, and saw service during the Great Sepoy Mutiny, being present at the Second Relief of Lucknow and subsequent operations.

Ordnance Survey of the Peninsula of Sinai, by Charles William Wilson and Henry Spenser Palmer. Southampton (England): Ordnance Survey Office, on the title page: 1869 (the preface is dated 1871). English. Part I (out of three). Part I of the Ordnance Survey of the Peninsula of Sinai by Charles William Wilson and Henry Spenser Palmer, under the direction of Colonel Sir Henry James, Director-General of the British Ordnance Survey. The volume contains an account of the survey of the Peninsula of Sinai, the methods of survey and the findings. Twenty plates (some in color) with illustrations, plans and sections. A photograph of Oyun Musa (The springs of Moses, Sinai) is mounted on the title page. Charles William Wilson (1836-1905) was a British Royal Engineers officer, geographer and archaeologist, a pioneer of the modern survey of Palestine. In 1868, he and the British engineer and officer Henry Spenser Palmer (1838-1893) embarked on an expedition to the Peninsula of Sinai on behalf of the Palestine Exploration Fund. The findings of the survey were published in three parts (five volumes): a review of the survey, map portfolio and three photograph portfolios. This is the first part, reviewing the survey and its archeological findings. One of the participants in the expedition was the scholar and orientalist Eduard Henry Palmer (1840-1882), who headed another expedition to Sinai in 1882 (in the midst of the 'Urabi Revolt against the British involvement in Egypt) and was murdered by Bedouins together with the other members of the expedition. Appealing to the United States for support Sun Yat-sen, November 1918

                    Est: $20,000 - $30,000

Appealing to the United States for support Sun Yat-sen, November 1918 SUN YAT-SEN (1866-1925). Letter signed to [Paul Samuel] Reinsch, Shanghai, 19 November 1918. [With:] Typed copy of Sun Yat-sen's telegram to President Woodrow Wilson, Shanghai, 16 November 1918. One page, 278 x 216mm (minor rust from paperclip at top left). Sun Yat-sen appeals to Woodrow Wilson to support the fragile Chinese republic: "Whether Democracy or Militarism triumphs in China largely depends upon Your Excellency’s moral support of our helpless people at this stage." A rare and important letter to Samuel Reinsch, head of the American legation to China and a tireless advocate for increased American aid to China in return for its support of the Allies in the First World War. With the armistice signed the previous week, Sun Yat-sen appealed to Wilson via telegram, a copy of which he enclosed with the present letter: "As you are the representative of a nation which has always stood for Justice and Right, I am enclosing you a copy of my telegram to President Wilson. Through you alone will the President and the people of the United States see the true affairs existing now in China." In the telegram he congratulates the President “on the complete victory you have gained over Militarism in this World War. You have done the greatest service to civilization and democracy since the world began.” He then confirms his prediction that joining the conflict would empower “the Militarists in my country [who] would surely utilize the occasion to strangle democracy in China.” He proceeds to implore President Wilson for his help: “I am compelled to appeal to you personally for the sake of Justice, Democracy and Peace in China and make known to you our peace term.” Reinsch embraced wholeheartedly Sun Yat-sen's contention that the United States should focus its post-war energies on the industrialization of China. Yet those recommendations fell on deaf ears. Wilson, despite his stated ideals supporting national self-determination in the post-war order, agreed to allow Japan to assume control over the former German protectorate on the Shantung Peninsula, a move which prompted Reinsch to resign in protest. Wilson's betrayal at Versailles unleased a nationalist revolt in China––the May 4th Movement. This youth movement became the training and recruitment ground both for Sun Yat-Sen’s Nationalist Party, and for the emerging Communist Party.

VAN CAMPEN, who made this survey on the basis of the first survey that he made in 1840. The former estate of "Elsbroek", located near Hillegom, Zuid-Holland, has an important place in Dutch history: it was owned by a series of wealthy Dutch entrepreneurs, the most famous of whom were JAN SIX I and JAN SIX II. The link of the descendants of Jan Six to Hillegom are still alive and are testified to by the title carried by the present Jan Six X "Heer van Hillegom". In 1839 it was sold to the textile manufacturer of English origin John Waterloo Wilson (1815-1883). He set up his factory in Haarlem on the "Muizenveld" in early 1830s. Due to the wish of and under pressure from the council of Hillegom to be able to expand, Wilson, after protracted negotations, decided to sell the estate and closed his factory in 1872.
