Important partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, July 26, 1916, the appointment of JAMES WILLIAM MCANDREW to serve as "Major General in the Regular Army of the United States". Wilson signs boldly at the conclusion in black ink Co-signed at bottom by Secretary of War NEWTON D. BAKER (1871-1937). Very good. JAMES WILLIAM MCANDREW (1862–1922) was a career officer in Army, and was most notable for his service as chief of staff of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I. His early assignments were in the West, and he took part in the Ghost Dance War of 1890-1891. He served in Cuba during the Spanish–American War, including the Battle of El Caney and the Siege of Santiago, and in the Philippines during the Philippine-American War. In May 1918, John J. Pershing named McAndrew to succeed James Harbord as AEF chief of staff, a position he undertook with Pershing's complete confidence and satisfaction.

            Baden-Powell Robert 1857 - 1941 Superb Scouting letter by Baden-Powell to Boy Scouts' executive Lewis Gawtry referencing Gilwell Park, Camp Chief Belge Wilson going to India, and B - P's first and only Australian Jamboree Autograph Letter Signed "Baden Powell," 2 pages, 5" x 8", front and verso. On his engraved stationery. Pax Hill, Bentley, Hampshire, England, September 28, 1933. With original 5.25" x 4.25" postmarked King George V Three Half Pence postage stamped envelope addressed by Baden Powell to "Lewis Gawtry, Esqr. / Stafford Hotel / St James Place / SW./1." Opened at back flap. Fine condition. In full, "I was so glad to get just a glimpse of you today, & am only sorry that, having to go to Edinburgh tonight, I cannot be there to show you round Gilwell & explain to you our training methods tomorrow. But I hope Wilson, our Camp Chief, will be there to do so. We are sending him to India next month to carry out a tour of inspection & instruction during the winter. He is good though silent! If, however, there should arise any points on which you would like any further information, don't hesitate to write to me here. I am so very glad that the idea of your Scouts from the West visiting the Australian Jamboree appeals to you. Its date is 28 Dec 34 to 10 Jan. 35." London's Gilwell Park still is a camp site and activity center for Scouting groups and all youth organizations, as well as a training center for scout leaders. In 1933, Colonel John S. "Belge" Wilson (1888-1969), Camp Chief of International Training Centre at Gilwell, conducted a Wood Badge course at Pachmarhi, India. Baden-Powell had visited India in 1921 where he met and recruited Col. Wilson, who was then Senior Deputy Commissioner of Police in Calcutta, and, in his free time, was Calcutta's District Scout Commissioner. Col. Wilson was Secretary General of the World Organization of the Scout Movement from 1938 - 1951. The first Australian Pan-Pacific Jamboree was held in Frankston, Victoria, 26 miles southeast of Melbourne. It was the first international gathering of Scouts outside of Europe and was the only Australian Jamboree attended by Baden - Powell. American banker Lewis Gawtry (1869 - 1954) worked with the Boy Scouts for 40 years, becoming a member of the Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America in 1919, serving until his death. He was Treasurer of the National Council of the Boy Scouts (1935 - 1947) and President of the Manhattan Council Executive Board (1929 - 1954). In 1931, Gawtry received the Boy Scouts' highest award, the Silver Buffalo, for distinguished service to boyhood.

Reliure de la deuxième moitié du XIXυe siècle, demi-maroquin rouge à long grain avec coins, dos lisse orné (reliure frottée). Provenance : ex-dono manuscrit à l'époque : "Edward to Charles Campbell. Merton Abbey, Surrey, England". ÉDITION ORIGINALE de cette superbe suite aux travaux de l'ornithologue Alexander Wilson (1766-1813) dont l'American ornithology avait paru en huit volumes de 1808 à 1814 (les deux derniers volumes à titre posthume). La mention "not given by Wilson" à la fin de l'intitulé de cet ouvrage signifie que les espèces décrites ici ne l'ont pas été précédemment par Wilson dans ses oeuvres. Charles-Lucien Bonaparte était le premier enfant de Lucien, second frère de Napoléon. Il suivit son père en Italie après la brouille de ce dernier avec Napoléon sous le Consulat. En 1822 il s'installa pour quelques années aux États-Unis et s'établit à Philadelphie jusqu'en 1826. Zoologiste éminent spécialisé dans l'ornithologie, il a publié de nombreux ouvrages en anglais, en français, en italien et en latin. Cet ouvrage est une suite aux travaux du plus grand ornithologue américain qui avait entrepris de recenser les espèces d'oiseaux d'Amérique du Nord et fut interrompu dans ses recherches par une crise de dysenterie. Charles Lucien Bonaparte avait initialement prévu de faire paraître son ouvrage en trois volumes. Il en fit paraître un quatrième en 1833, cinq ans après son retour en Europe et la publication du tome III.             NAVY CROSS MARINE'S WOODROW WILSON ARCHIVE Unique and extensive archive of BURWELL H. CLARKE, an enlisted Marine who was chosen for officer training and served in Haiti, Cuba, and other posts during the era of WWI. Clarke was awarded the Navy Cross on October 21, 1926 for sacrificing his life in the Denmark Lake explosives disaster. Lot includes five oversized documents of promotion or commendation, of which four are signed by President Woodrow Wilson: the first a partly printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio, Washington, October 4, 1916, an appointment commissioning Clarke as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marines under the traditional probationary period, boldly signed, "Woodrow Wilson" at bottom, counter-signed by Secretary of the Navy JOSEPHUS DANIELS. Clarke's promotion is re-written on an even more elaborate partly-printed D.S., 1p., vellum folio, Washington, March 16, 1917, with extensive and remarkable print engravings adorning the document, again counter-signed by Secretary Daniels. The lot includes an additional D.S. for promotion to First Lieutenant and another for Captain, both signed by Wilson and Daniels. The fifth partly printed D.S., 1p. folio, Scranton, January 23, 1925, certifies Clarke as having passed an International Correspondence School course in "Bookkeeping Accounting and Auditing". Boldly signed by famed Marine Corps Commandant, Major General "JOHN A. LEJEUNE". Included with the lot is a binder containing over fifty various documents relating to Captain Clarke's military career, with various officers' signatures, and many bearing official letterheads. Several highlights include: a war-dated partly-printed D.S., 1p., 4to., Washington, Nov. 24, 1914, Clarke's first promotion to corporal, signed by, "George Barnett", then Commandant of the Corps. Barnett was the first to serve the four-year period, and was replaced by Lejeune. Also included is a T.L.S. on official Marine Corps Headquarters letterhead, 2pp., 4to., Washington, January 25, 1917, a personal commendation written to Clarke and signed by Lejeune, congratulating Clarke for his leadership in St. Marc, Haiti during a Marine occupation there. Included on the second page is a typed letter from the citizens of St. Marc praising Clarke. Also present is a 1917 letter giving instructions to Clarke for setting up a surveillance and espionage operation on the North Coast of Cuba to watch for German U-boats. Additional documents include official correspondence such as communiqués on developments during the 1917 Cuban revolt, Clarke's enlisted man's discharge to become an officer, his assignments to expeditions in Haiti, and various personal correspondences. Various condition, most very good to fine. Should be examined!
