        "The War Paintings" by Claggett Wilson [136914]

        The War Paintings published by J.H. Sears & Company, Inc., 1928, New York. Paintings by Claggett Wilson, written by Alexander Woollcott and Henry McBride. The incredible color plates were printed in France separately from the text and then tipped in (that is, bound in with the text). Hardcover book size is 14.5 x 16.75 inches. Claggett Wilson (1887-1952) was one of America's first Modernist painters. Early in his career (1915), he was a teacher of painting and drawing at Columbia University. Serving as a lieutenant in The First World War, Claggett Wilson returned from France (1919) to document his experiences in his highly acclaimed War Paintings for which he was recommended for the Nobel Prize. State: Washington, D.C.

Price of $350. "This does not include the frame, which is to be returned to the painter). Return for Budworth for shipment back to the artist at the above address." Also with a tag from the "First Municipal Art Exhibition at Rockefeller Center" in 1934, directed by Holger Cahill, later Director of the Federal Arts Project. Housed in a vintage Chinese export frame. OS: 41 1/2" x 32 1/2", SS: 34 1/2" x 25 1/2". Good condition.

        WWI PHOTO COLLECTION OF DECORATED MARINE AND ARTIST CLAGGETT WILSON (DC/WI, 1887-1952) Real Photo war postcards of USMC Lt. Wilson Clagett who fought in the campaigns of St. Mihiel, Chateau Thierry, Champagne and Meuse-Argonne, was in charge of the HQ Detachment of the 4th Brigade, also Aide-de-Camp to the Brigade Commander, personal liaison between Gen Harbouard and Gen Degoutte. Along with 1920s-30s Photo postcards of the artist with friends in Europe, his passport. Wilson went on to a successful career as an artist and designer for theatre and film. Good condition. Wilson was a recipient of the Navy Cross with four citation stars.

        WWI US NAVY CROSS WITH LETTER AND BATTLE DRAWING FROM RECIPIENT, MARINE & ARTIST CLAGGETT WILSON (DC/WI, 1887-1952) Navy Cross with Four Citation Stars, awarded to USMC Lt. Wilson Clagett "for meritorious and distinguished service during the campaigns of St. Mihiel, Chateau Thierry, Champagne and Meuse-Argonne", in charge of the HQ Detachment of the 4th Brigade, also Aide-de-Camp to the Brigade Commander, personal liaison between Gen Harbouard and Gen Degoutte. Also included are his original sketch of a battle and a Sept. 20th, 1918 letter to his brother, Major Henry Clinton Wilson, US Army, G-5 Offices, France, describing the fighting in vivid language. Wilson went on to a successful career as an artist and designer for theatre and film.
