African- American artist Ellis Wilson was born in Mayfield, Kentucky and graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago. A nationally acclaimed artist, Wilson earned an honorable mention award from the Harmon Foundation in 1933 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1944. In the early 1950s, Ellis Wilson received a $3000 award from the Terry Art Institute National Contest in Miami. Wilson traveled to Haiti with the award money in search of new inspiration for his paintings.
