Awarded the New South Wales Travelling Art Scholarship in 1937, Wilson accordingly embarked for England in June the same year, studying first briefly at the Royal Academy before enrolling at the more progressive Westminster School under British modern painters, Mark Gertler and Elmslie Owen. The latter was especially influential, urging the young artist to proceed in the vein of the French avant-garde ‘according to knowledge rather than mere vision’2, and encouraging Wilson to pursue his cubist explorations further at Amedée Ozenfant’s Academy in Earl’s Court. In the early months of 1939, Wilson departed London for the Continent where he travelled and sketched in Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy, absorbing, among other things, that sense of rounded volumetric form so revered in the work of Italian Quattrocentro primitives such as Piero della Francesca. Above all though, it was the city of Paris that inspired Wilson most – ‘not the large-scale vistas of the master-planned metropolis… but the more intimate curves and corners of narrow streets, and tree-lined quays of the Seine’3 – and thus, he spent hours capturing  en plein air the picturesque streets and majestic bridges in drawings that would later provide the basis for his celebrated series of Paris cityscapes undertaken upon his return to Australia in late 1939 following the outbreak of World War II. Immortalising the oldest and arguably most iconic bridge in Paris with its noble arches linking the Île de la Cité to both the left and right banks, the present work encapsulates superbly Wilson’s earlier explorations of the Paris theme that are distinguished by an underlying sense of construction and careful attention to composition and architectural form. Indeed, as Wilson’s experience of Europe grew more distant in time later iterations such as By the Seine, c.1945 (Mr and Mrs Crebbin collection) or Pont Neuf, 1945 (Art Gallery of New South Wales) by contrast evidenced a much looser treatment and a greater preoccupation with impressionistic effects of light and colour – leading one critic in 1947 to disparagingly remark upon the ‘heavy cookery’4 of these late works, citing their use of thick impasto and absence of formal definition. Resonating throughout all Wilson’s pensive European landscapes however, including  Pont Neuf, is a pervading sense of isolation, of the artist as outsider – a feeling perhaps derived from the impending war which had precipitated his trip in the first place, and which no doubt prevented him from stepping outside the role of tourist. The invariably wet and chilly vignettes are either disconcertingly empty, or when peopled – as is the case here with the fishermen scattered along the embankment – such figures remain oblivious of the artist, continuing the closed activities of their daily lives. In this respect, Wilson’s perspective contrasts starkly with that of his artistic peer, William Dobell, with whom he lived and studied in London. For where Dobell found the inhabitants of a city such as Paris or London much more intriguing and typical than their surroundings, Wilson concentrated rather upon the streetscapes and buildings as his subjects, discerning in the architecture the unique character he was seeking.   1. ERIC WILSON (1911 - 1946) YABTREE HILLS, WANTABADGERY, 1946 oil on canvas board 40.5 x 50.5 cm signed and dated lower left: Eric Wilson ‘46 signed and inscribed with title verso: SKETCH / YABTREE HILLS. / Eric Wilson PROVENANCE Sir Keith Murdoch, Cruden Farm Thence by descent Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, Cruden Farm, Victoria Thence by descent Private collection, Melbourne ESSAY Upon his return to Australia in 1939 following the outbreak of the Second World War, Wilson first embarked upon an impressive series of European streetscapes inspired by his travels abroad (see lot 45), before once again turning his attention to capturing the rural landscape of his homeland. Although the Australian landscape posed quite different challenges to the painting of European urban scenes, his early investigations such as Bushpiece Berowra, and Burnt Trees, both dated 1945, echoed the approach employed by Wilson in the careful construction of his streetscapes, with the magnified trees, bushes and rocks of the foreground serving as architectural elements within which space is articulated. Even amidst the chaotic untidiness of the Australian bush, Wilson’s architectural interests here predominate, with an emphasis on balance and the structural logic of the composition signalling the artist’s conscious return to his earlier Ozenfant training.    In December of 1945, Wilson was invited by Sir Keith Murdoch to paint at his property on the Murrumbidgee River, Wantabadgery, near Wagga in New South Wales. Fascinated by this new landscape with its lush rolling hills, contorted tree trunks and sun-bleached, golden paddocks, Wilson thus commenced what would be his last major series of paintings, splendidly encapsulated here by Yabtree Hills, Wantabadgery, 1946. While derived from his time spent exploring the property, significantly such works were not faithful reproductions of what he perceived; rather Wilson’s overriding interest lie in producing a synchronous whole in which the subject was respected only to the degree that it offered shapes, lines, colours, textures and rhythms. Accordingly, in a manner akin to both his European streetscapes and earlier Australian landscapes from the same year, the principles of abstraction which he had elaborated upon two years earlier continued to influence his vision. As Wilson mused in 1943, ‘…in whatever idiom [is] chosen for expression, plastic values are my main consideration. It is this emphasis on the architectural quality – the orchestration of the formal elements into a symphonic whole – that I find most sympathy with in the modern movement.’1   For indeed, despite the frequent categorisation of Wilson’s oeuvre into distinct groups of landscapes vis à vis abstracts, throughout all his myriad achievements it was this disciplined restructuring and orchestration of formal elements that would remain his singular aim - and ultimately, his legacy for Australian art and theory of the 1940s.   1. Bearing unmistakable affinities with the artist’s two versions of Rue de l’Hotel de Ville, Paris, c.1942 (formerly in the collections of D. R. Sheumack and Mr and Mrs R. C. By the Seine, Paris, 1939, c.1941 - 43 in a private collection competes with Rue de la Bonne, Montmarte, 1939, c.1941 - 42 in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, trumped only by the brilliant Scott Street, Glasgow, c.1942 secured by the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne through the Felton Bequest.1 Wilson won the New South Wales Travelling Art Scholarship in 1937, moving to England then France to study. He travelled and sketched in Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy, where he absorbed, among other things, that sense of touch and form so celebrated in the work of the Italian masters of the Quattrocento.2 The outbreak of the Second World War caused Wilson to return to Australia early, turning to his sketchbooks for numerous European subjects over the following years. Above all it was the scenes of Paris that inspired him most. '‘It was not the large-scale vistas of the master-planned metropolis that mattered most to him [wrote fellow artist Douglas Dundas], but the more intimate curves and corners of narrow streets, and the bridges and tree-lined quays of the Seine.'’3 Our painting, By the Seine, Paris, c.1942 - 1944 is an example, magnificently composed and constructed, having been painted in Australia from detailed pen and pencil sketches recorded en plein air some years before. The painting follows the ink sketch very closely, the only significant addition being that of three fishermen. (The drawing is in the National Gallery of Victoria, previously being in the collection of Sir Keith Murdoch, who, in 1945, commissioned Wilson to paint a series of landscape on his property at Wantabadgery, on the Murrumbidgee River in New South Wales.) By the Seine, Paris features a characteristic high view point looking down to the river'’s embankment, seen in a number of related paintings, especially Seine, Paris, 1939 - 42 (once in the collection of Mrs Una Fraser) and Pont Neuf, c.1945 (Eric Wilson catalogue, op. cit., cat. 60, illus.). Fishermen were often added, as in Fisherman on the Seine (Leonard Joel, 7 November 1973, lot 254), giving the scenes a distinct human touch. The serpentine trunks of trees, as in our work, often dominate the foreground, the natural contrasted with the man-made curves of quays and the geometry of descending steps. Textures are lively, furthering the sense of tactility, and the atmosphere is all enveloping. The reflective mood evokes a breath of nostalgia, part of the attraction coming from the peeling back of objectivity to reveal a Paris before its wartime occupation. 1. Fine examples of Wilson’s landscapes were purchased by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide and the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne in 1942. Prominent private collectors included Sir Warwick Fairfax, Ronald Instone, Norman Schureck and Lloyd Rees. 2. See the sketch [Flight to Egypt, after Quattrocento composition], (1937) and related studies in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. The very gifted Wilson worked with equal success as a modern realist and a Cubist, Abstract - The Kitchen Stove, 1943 in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales being a fine example of the latter. 3. Dundas, D., ‘Eric Wilson’, Art and Australia, vol. 12, no. 1, July - September Sydney, 1974, 56. Dundas described Wilson as ‘…one of the bright stars in the firmament of Australian art in the 1940s...'…’, p. 48 DAVID THOMAS
