Signed, inscribed "B.A.T." and numbered 1/1 in white ink, lower margin. Printed at Pamplemousse Press, New York. Published by Exit Art, New York. There is a lighting system in the frame that allows the transparent work to be illuminated. Additional impressions are in the permanent collection of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Pennsylvania Academy of of Fine Art, Pennsylvania, the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, and the Yale University Art Gallery. X juxtaposes a 1964 photograph of Civil Rights activist Malcolm X by photographer Marion S. Trikosko with the 1884 painting Madame X by John Singer Sargent. The photograph captures Malcolm X in a contemplative moment at a press conference for Martin Luther King, Jr. Obscuring the spatial relationship between the two figures, Wilson superimposed Sargent's rendition of Parisian socialite Madame Gautreau so that her hand appears draped over Malcolm X's shoulder. The combined image is then inverted in color; both figures are depicted as negative images. Wilson's work raises the issues of representation in art: the idea of a traditionally accepted "canon" of art and how the technical processes used to produce works of photography impact representation as well as contrasting matters of identity, politics, and power.

Fred Wilson (born 1954) in the Bronx, New York - is an American artist and describes himself as of "African, Native American, European and Amerindian" descent. He received a BFA from Purchase College, State University of New York. Wilson challenges colonial assumptions on history, culture, and race – encouraging viewers to consider the social and historical narratives that represent the western canon. Wilson received a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant" in 1999 and the Larry Aldrich Foundation Award in 2003. Wilson represented the United States at the Biennial Cairo in 1992 and the Venice Biennale in 2003.         Milieu, 2017 Blown glass 36 × 20 × 1.75 in (91.4 × 50.8 × 4.4 cm) No. 66606 Fred Wilson B. 1954, New York, USA Challenging the normative discourses of history, culture, and race, Fred Wilson deconstructs the meaning and importance of physical objects and cultural symbols to upend the ways in which viewers confront history. Using found objects with standardized interpretations, he recontextualizes artifacts to disrupt traditional cultural narratives and interrogate their role in shaping social hierarchies. This revitalization of objects and ideas allows viewers to understand the ways in which context creates meaning and to rethink the way their perspectives are shaped. Juxtaposed against the stark white of gallery walls, the glass drips of Milieu use black as both subject and object. With the work, Wilson examines the meanings projected onto and associated with form, medium, and color. Evoking liquids such as teardrops, ink, oil, and tar, the drips refer to the symbolic use of black in relation to race and the resulting complexities and problems of representation. The familiarity of the objects and forms in Wilson’s oeuvre enables their poignancy, bringing viewers into a space to critically examine accepted narratives.
