        GUS WILSON TURNED HEAD DUCK DECOY.

        Pleasing decoy with artfully turned head and brown glass eyes are joined to the elongated body. Gus Wilson was a lighthouse keeper at the Spring Point Ledge lighthouse in Maine. He spent much of his days carving Eiders, Black Ducks, Scotters and Mergansers. He was a prolific and creative carver, some of his works have sold for as much as $330,000. SIZE: 7" h x 15 1/2" l. CONDITION: decoy has old repainted surfaces. One of original weights remain along the bottom. Good. (05-331/TG). $800-1,200.

        GUS WILSON BLACK DUCK DECOY.

        Carved from the solid, the decoy with applied head, square base, nicely carved simplistic wings and tail in older untouched surface. An oval plug appears beneath the tail. During the carving of the decoy, a knot was removed from the block and then the depression was covered with the plug, a nice and unique detail. The decoy is further finished with wooden eyes, green beak and blue with black wing markings. Gus Wilson was a lighthouse keeper at the Spring Point Ledge lighthouse in Maine.         Excellent early period calling black duck with a rocking head by Augustus Aaron “Gus” Wilson (1864-1950) is one of his signature innovations. Carved wings and wingtips. Original paint with subtle painted feather detail. In overall very good condition with only a few small rubs. Old tight hairline check in neck. Wilson was one of the very few carvers to tackle this time consuming method of imparting motion to the decoys in his rig. 4500-6500
