      Matthew Wilson (1814-1892, American), "Portrait of a Bearded Gentleman," 1879, oil on canvas, signed lower left, presented in the original ornate gilt and gesso frame, H.- 26 1/2 in., W.- 21 1/4 in. Note: Wilson was a noted portrait painter and miniaturist. He visited New Orleans in 1845. His portrait subjects included politicians and dignitaries, and he did a portrait of Abraham Lincoln two weeks before the assassination.

      MATTHEW HENRY WILSON (1814-1892): EVE Oil on canvas, relined, enclosed in a protective shadow box. Note: Matthew Henry Wilson (1814-1892) was born in London and arrived in the United States in 1832. He studied with Henry Inman in Philadelphia and with Edouard Dubufe in Paris. He traveled extensively in the states in the 1840's through the 1860's. He was in great demand as a portrait and miniature painter. He painted the last life portrait of Abraham Lincoln just weeks before the President was assassinated. 31 1/2 x 17 1/2 in. (sight), 42 x 28 in. (frame), 45 x 31 in. (shadow box).
