Reginald Wilson Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1909 - d. 1993

During the long days of the illness that preceded Reginald Wilson's death in 1993, he and his wife decided that all of his work still in their possession should go to the Woodstock School of Art. The extraordinary gift, now in the school's safekeeping, includes approximately 200 works of art, from which the present exhibition was selected.

Reginald Wilson was born in 1909 in the small town of Butler, Ohio. Determined from boyhood to be an artist, he arrived at the Art Students League of New York when he was twenty. He studied with John Stuart Currie, among others, meanwhile making a living with odd jobs like that of office boy or night watchman. He was an easel painter in the Federal Art Project and served for three years as an airplane mechanic in the US Army Air Force during World War II. He and the artist Carolyn Haeberlin were married in 1942, moving in 1945 to where they made their home in a 200-year-old farmhouse.

Wilson's paintings and works in other media were exhibited widely beginning in the 1940's, in New York City and in major museums and universities across the country. In Woodstock he showed at a number of galleries including that of the Woodstock Artists Association where he won the 1973 Sally Jacobs-Phoebe Towbin Award.

Biography from the Archives of askART: A low profile artist initially committed to no particular style of art, Reginald Wilson, nicknamed Reggie, first earned a living as a cartoonist, and then after study at the Art Students League, became a painter. His style has been described as "geometric-constructivist". (Falk 3598) At the League, he worked with teachers John Steuart Curry, Thomas Benton, Harry Wickey and Guy Pene du Bois, but he eschewed teaching art because he did not want to accept responsibility for directing the career of another person. Wilson was born in Butler, Ohio to a family that had no particular interest in art. During World War II, he was an airplane mechanic. In 1945, just after the war, he went to Woodstock, New York where he spent the remainder of his life, dying in 1993. His good friend, Arnold Blanch, had introduced him to the area in 1939. He and his wife, artist Carolyn Haeberlin, bought a home on the Sawkill River and lived with their two children. Many of his portrait and genre paintings, ranging in styles from realistic to abstract, were inspired by domestic scenes, especially by his children and their toys. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Woodstock Art Association. Exhibition venues include the Whitney Museum of American Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Boston Museum, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts,Woodstock Art Association. Metropolitan Museum, Brooklyn Museum, Baltimore Museum, Ganso Gallery, NYC, Frank Perls Gallery, NYC and Ferargil Gallery, NYC
