RICHARD WILSON (Penegoes, Montgomeryshire, 1714 - Denbighshire, 1782). "View of Naples." Oil on canvas. Relined. Unsigned. It presents some faults in the painting. Measurements: 73 x 95 cm; 89 x 110,5 cm (frame). Richard Wilson was one of the most important British landscape painters of the 18th century. He drew much of his inspiration for his work from the imaginary landscape painting of Claude Lorrain. In this canvas we see a typical English Baroque view, albeit contextualized in the Neapolitan countryside with Vesuvius in the last instance, rigorously ordered in a thoughtful and rational composition. Nature is placid and captured with attention to detail and naturalism, and the landscape is brought to life and animation by the characters dotted in the foreground: we see a peasant woman with her son in front of a fountain, highlighted by the bright tones of their clothes and worked with particular attention to the description of the types. The composition is clearly structured around the concept of nature. Thus, in the foreground we find two typically Italian trees whose canopy largely covers the blue sky of the composition. This nature sees its continuity in the last planes: an esplanade that combines water surfaces and vegetation is dotted with small buildings, a characteristic of the Italian landscape of the seventeenth century. Finally, it is worth mentioning the coloring used, of brilliant tonality, especially for the sky. Richard Wilson studied in London with Thomas Wright. He was able to portray the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York. In 1755 he returned to England, and became one of the first English landscape painters. He exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1760. When the Royal Academy of Arts was established in 1768 he was one of the original members, and was a regular contributor to its exhibitions until 1780. He was not a popular artist during his lifetime. However, after his death, his fame grew and in 1814 about 70 of his works were exhibited at the British Institution. Currently part of his work is preserved in the National Gallery.

This painting appears to be related to 'A Summer Evening (on the Arno III)', of 1764, and now in the Manchester City Galleries, (WGC, p.214, pl.101a; Wilson Online Reference P95). Condition Report: Framed:43.5 x 38.5cm Relined. A little rubbing to the extreme edges but appears to be in otherwise good order and presents well overall. A woman, her arms raised in a faint, stands on the shore, surrounded by other angry women. Two ships are sinking in the stormy sea. The depiction shows a story according to Ovid: Keyx, husband of Alkyone and son of Hesperus, did not return from a journey to the oracle in Klaros. A storm in the Mediterranean had capsized his ship. Alkyone, who was praying to the gods, saw the lifeless body of her husband one morning. She then threw herself off the cliffs to drown herself in the sea. But instead of sinking into the sea, she flew towards her dead husband. The gods were merciful and had turned her into a bird. Lake Avernus is located in the volcanic region near Naples and it is part of the Phlegraean Fields. Linksseitig der beiden Männer zwei antike Fragmente, ihnen gegenüber, auf der anderen Uferseite, wohl die Überreste des antiken Apollotempels. Dahinter sich hochziehend ein bewaldetes Gebirge mit einer großen Burganlage unter hellblauem Himmel mit großen Wolkenformationen, im Licht der leicht gelblich untergehenden Sonne. Rechtsseitig wird das Bild gerahmt von einem hohen Baum und einem knorrig nach oben ragenden Baumstamm. Harmonische ruhige Malerei, teils mit Spiegelung der am Ufer stehenden Gebäude im Wasser, in der typischen Manier des Künstlers. Anmerkung: Ein fast identisches spiegelverkehrtes Gemälde des Künstlers wurde bei Bonhams, London, am 12. The Welsh landscape painter Richard Wilson is one of the most important British landscape painters of the 18th century. He was heavily inspired by Claude Lorrain's imaginary landscape painting. The painting shows Lake Avernus in the light of an early evening. An ancient ruin is in the background. Two trees frame the picturesque scene on the right side. Lake Avernus is located in the volcanic region near Naples and it is part of the Phlegraean Fields. The region is associated with ancient mythology and still considered a pleasant holiday destination due to its natural beauty. Many artists of the 18th century were inspired by the classical landscape painting. There are various versions of this work by Wilson, his students and successors. The present picture is one of Wilsons highest quality versions. The most famous version was can be found in the Tate Gallery London, and is dated circa 1765.

LANDSCHAFT AM LAGO D‘AVERNO MIT TANZENDEN Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 94 x 131 cm. In vergoldetem Rahmen. Anbei in Kopie ein Gutachten von Patrizia Caretto, Turin, 5. 12. 2007. Weite Landschaft mit im Mittelgrund befindlichem See während sich rechts im Vordergrund ganz dem arkadischen Zeitgeist verpflichtet eine Menschengruppe in antikisierender Kleidung befindet, die in ihrem Tanz den ruhigen Grundton des Gemäldes bricht, ihn jedoch auf diese Weise auch bestätigt. Der See war im 18. und auch noch im 19. Jahrhundert ein populäres Motiv der romantischen Landschaftsmalerei – zum Beispiel war er auch für Hackert ein beliebtes Motiv – und war schon bei Vergil der Eingang in die Unterwelt. Den arkadischen Bezug ermöglichte nicht zuletzt die antike Bebauung, so ist etwa ein Apollo-Tempel noch als Ruine erhalten, der den Zeitenbezug ermöglicht. Literatur: Vgl.
