Two Wes Wilson (1937-2020) psychedelic concert posters: The Association BG 18, Bill Graham, Fillmore Auditorium, 1966; Grass Roots / Daily Flash, Lights by Bill Ham, Family Dog Productions, Avalon Ballroom, 1966. Biography from BahrGallery.com: Wes Wilson's style of filling all available space with lettering, of creating fluid forms made from letters, and using flowing letters to create shapes became the standard that most psychedelic artists followed. It helped put the "psychedelic" in the art. The first clear example of this, and a key piece in Wilson's history, was the poster BG-18, done for a show with the Association at the Fillmore Auditorium (who were riding with the hit song, "Along Comes Mary," referred to in the poster).

"'The Beard,' by Michael McClure, was a popular play that imagined a confrontation between Billy the Kid and Jean Harlow. This was the only production of the play held at The Fillmore, but it was held at many other venues in the area around the same period. The production ended with explicit oral sex between the protagonists, and often resulted in cast member arrests, until the ACLU intervened. Because it was a one-time production, this poster was produced in very limited quantity." Warhol made a film version in this same year. This is the 1st printing, printed on vellum, with a white verso; the 2nd printing has a blue verso. BG-19.

This poster is from the midpoint of that fabled run, with the Grateful Dead in their first sole headlining gig at the Fillmore. The idea for this poster is symmetry and balance: the Dead and Big Mama Mae Thornton balancing each other out. Coastal hippies might not have been tuned in to Big Mama Thornton, but she'd recorded the first—and the supremely bluesiest—version of "Hound Dog." (Modern; Music; Psychedelic Rock; American)

ARTIST: WES WILSON (1937-2020) SIZE: 14 x 22 in./35.5 x 56 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: "Is this face leering or smiling? The poster audience was highly suggestible, and the posters' imagery provided opportunities for widely diverse interpretations. Many people see this as a demonic face. It's the figure's size, perhaps—the looming presence in hot red that flashes a devilish gleam and a wry smirk. Wilson was surprised that people found this face menacing. He had drawn a smiling old man with a twinkle in his eye, inspired by the work of an African artist. Yet it doesn't matter what you see. For the audience, involvement in the art was a trip, and one way or another it took you to where you were coming from" (High Societies, p. 69). Along with two impressive headline acts, this concert was also the San Francisco debut of The Doors. (Modern; Music; Psychedelic Rock; American)

The Blues Project headlined with The Great Society as the opening act; “lights and stuff” were provided by Tony Martin. The photograph of a Native American man was altered to make it look like he’s smoking a joint; this image and the text below it (”May the baby Jesus shut your mouth and open your mind”) would become the official logo for Family Dog. Additionally, this printing is on stock which glows or fluoresces under black light. (Modern; Music; American; Psychedelic Rock)

ARTIST: WES WILSON (1937- ) SIZE: 13 5/8 x 22 1/2 in./35.3 x 54.5 cm PRINTER: Creative Lithograph, Oakland DESCRIPTION: "Wilson had several polarities in mind as this design took shape: male-female, mind-body, and East-West. The last pairing inspired the colors... The West is cool silver, symbolic of rationalism, materialism, science, and technology. Gold, used for the East, symbolizes warmth and spirituality, though here the color is modified to a tart chartreuse... Here Wilson presents the yin-yang... in the form of a mandala. It is not a static, centrally focused mandala, but a very dynamic one. If the diagonal S-form is studied carefully it may seem to return on itself, like the infinity symbol or a Mobius strip" (High Societies, p. 75). It's also worth noting that the silver ink used here is not just beautiful on its own—viewed under black light, the silver should fluoresce bright purple. ARTIST: WES WILSON (1937- ) SIZE: 14 1/8 x 20 1/2 in./36 x 52 cm DESCRIPTION: This poster announces the first Family Dog concert presented by Chet Helms, and reveals the first stylistic backbones of the psychedelic poster aesthetic. The hand-drawn letters bulge and curve around the page as if animated—or as seen during an acid trip. The photograph at center was borrowed from the book "The American Heritage Book of Indians," which would continue to be a source for imagery for many Family Dog posters to come. Though produced in black and white, Wilson hand-colored one copy at the concert, proving his foresight for the brightly colored designs that would soon be created.
