Wilwayco debuted his “Vine Series” in a 1998 solo exhibition at the Lopez Museum Gallery and would continue to showcase them in a 1999 one-man show at Galleria Duemila titled “Vine Series II,” where the work at hand was exhibited. The artist’s Vine Series was born due to Wilwayco’s studio being surrounded by lush gardens, which functioned as a miniature ecosystem in itself. In his artist’s statement during his 1998 Lopez Museum Gallery show, Wilwayco said (as articulated by art critic Emmanuel Torres) that the vine paintings are meant to push his creative boundaries “over the edge” and “produce a tension more absorbing than that of the “vines” he has clung to long enough.” With their dynamic vitality, the vine paintings were a natural progression and an artistic evolution from the wild exuberance of his Jeepney Fantasia and the chromatic allure of the Heliconia: Birds of Paradise. The warm colors of Wilwayco’s vines sing the praises of a sublime living and a sacred existence. As what Climbing Vines #61 encapsulates, with its blazing reds, sinuous curves, and supple forms, Wilwayco’s Vine Series exalts nature as our shared lifeblood and the firm giver of a much-needed respite amid the pains and adversities of a mortal existence.             David's Column signed and dated 1975 (upper left) oil on canvas 37 1/2" x 36 1/4" (95 cm x 92 cm) León Gallery wishes to thank the artist for confirming the authenticity of this lot After graduating from high school in 1967, then-fifteen-year-old Edwin Wilwayco had already firmly resolved to pursue Fine Arts, despite the financial constraints his family had been undergoing at that time. Wilwayco would go on to enroll at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts, in 1968, at the advice of an aunt and with the help of his grandparents, who supported his studies. In Wilwayco’s second year of higher studies, he received a Celia Diaz Laurel scholarship. At the UP, Wilwayco encountered and became artistically guided by the giants of Philippine art of his time: Jose Joya, who was college dean from 1970 to 1978, Napoleon Abueva, who would succeed Joya as dean, from 1978 to 1979, Constancio Bernardo, and Dr. Rodolfo Paras-Perez. From the day he set foot in UP, began to learn within its confines, and even after graduating in 1972, Wilwayco has held Joya in great reverence. In Cid Reyes’ monograph on Wilwayco, the artist has only words of praise for the esteemed abstract expressionist. “He didn’t look like an artist. He was very professional. He dressed neatly and was very articulate. He was also strict, a disciplinarian,” Wilwayco says. As such, Wilwayco’s earliest works, such as this 1975 piece, have that spellbinding affinity and resemblance to Joya’s works. It is no wonder that Joya greatly influenced Wilwayco in the early stages of his career, as the former was at the height of his creative powers in the 1960s and 1970s. In this painting, Wilwayco’s choice of subject matter and style evokes Joya’s expressionist, block-like forms. Worth mentioning is Wilwayco’s depiction of the ancient Tagalog script baybayin, an element Joya started to incorporate in his works during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Even in the beginning of his painting career, Wilwayco had already been manifesting his tenacity for abstraction and his lyrical, expressive approach to the style. (A.M.)

The 26th in his series titled Fractals, this painting means to deal with shapes and patterns, as suggested by the definition of its word: a curve or geometric form with the same statistical character as the whole. “Edwin Wilwayco has taken a most dramatic shift in his abstract expressionism with his new “Fractals” series of paintings,” a Lifestyle Inquirer article noted. “The result is an intriguing series of works that problematizes representation and gives art aficionados who champion his work an inkling on his creative process and the current state of his artistic mind.” In 2014, the year this piece was created, Wilwayco held a show titled “Recalibration” at the Momentous Arts in Singapore. It was the sequel to their 2006 show FourPlay I held at the Galeria Astra in Makati City. In a 2006 Manila Times article titled 'A long time coming,' published in conjunction with the FourPlay I show, Aviado jokingly shared that the exhibition title came from their "common denominator" of libog (libido) and timeless laughs for adult jokes. The centerpiece of the FourPlay II exhibition was this work aptly titled Interaction II. A rare collaboration among the four eminent maestros of our time, this is a unique piece for each artist painted in a specific area. Unlike other collaboration works in which individual styles splatter all over the composition, thus forming an incoherent, disconnected, and unintelligible whole, this particular painting palpably captures the respective creative ingenuities and artistic flairs of Bencab, Nuyda, Wilwayco, and Aviado. In Interaction II, the four artists transcend the boundaries of their creative differences and harmoniously integrate their individual virtuosities, styles, and themes. The work first engrosses the viewer toward the sublime eroticism of Bencab's nude woman. The exquisite sensuality of Wilwayco's lyrical abstract expressionism emphasizes his masterful weaving of the full potentials of color and space. The sultriness of Nuyda's bold brushstrokes and Aviado's fine grasp of the non-figurative are all sensuously imbibed within the composition. In a recent occasion, León Gallery had the privilege to talk to Edwin Wilwayco about the creative process that led to this work. Wilwayco recalls: “Ang ginawa naming style noon, yung ibang painting, mauuna si Tiny gumawa sa studio niya. Tapos si Bencab, si Pandy, tapos ako. Pagkatapos ko, ibibigay ko kay Tiny. Pag tapos na si Tiny, ibibigay niya sa akin. Until it took us almost six months, siyempre nagkakatamaran, follow-follow-up. (What we did then was Tiny would first create in his studio. Then Bencab, Pandy, and I. After I’ve done my part, I’ll give the painting to Tiny [and so on, and so forth]. Until it took us almost six months [to finish the work] due to occasional laziness and numerous follow-ups.) Bencab and Aviado first joined forces in a three-man show with Marciano Galang at the Art Association of the Philippines in 1965. It was also Bencab’s first art exhibition. Bencab, Aviado, and Nuyda's friendship can be traced back to the 1960s, when they started to immerse themselves in the art of printmaking in the workshop of Maring Llamado Reyes. Nuyda recalls that even during Bencab's European expatriation from the 1960s to the 1970s, they still found ways to catch up. "Ben, Pandy, and I saw each other in the early seventies in London and Paris," Nuyda says. Wilwayco and Nuyda first collaborated at their In2uition joint exhibit in 2005, and was attended by Cabrera. Nuyda suggested the idea of a group exhibit between him, Wilwayco, and Bencab. But it was Wilwayco who came up with the idea of a four-man show with the addition of Aviado. The show would eventually become FourPlay I. Thus, in all its facets, this work provides a fascinating insight into the creative chemistry—and special bond— among Bencab, Wilwayco, Nuyda, and Aviado, who have all found life-long companions and friendships in the presence of each other. Aside from a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Wilwayco was also conferred Award of Excellence, Fourth Year Advertising Design and Thesis; Best Individual Piece, Fourth Year Advertising Design; and the Pitoy Moreno Scholarship in Design. Later that year, he would be introduced to the "Saturday Group of Artists," which included H.R. Ocampo, Cesar Legaspi, Malang Santos, Onib Olmedo, and Eduardo Castrillo. He would later join the Philippine Advertising Counselors (PAC) as Studio Artist under the executive directorship of Romulo Olazo. Years later, in 1982, Wilwayco would submit his application for a study grant in painting to the British Council Manila. He would eventually be accepted as a scholar at the West Surrey College of Art and Design in Farnham, England. As a student, Wilwayco did a series of works: The Farnham Series, Hangers and Ropes Series, and Chairs and Cathedrals Series. These works would later be showcased at The Hidalgo Gallery in Makati in 1983. But these works were far isolated from his native roots. Notably, they were much more attuned to his British experience. One of Wilwayco's teachers at West Surrey commented on his susceptibility to fully embrace the rudiments of Western art, therefore depicting more and more foreign, alien scenes, giving his works an artificial, forced atmosphere. Hence, upon his return to the Philippines later in 1982, Wilwayco would touch on a subject intimately attached to his native sensibilities: the iconic jeepney. Thus, the genesis of the Jeepney Fantasia series. In the Jeepney Fantasia series, Wilwayco pays homage to the traditional Filipino jeepney, dubbed the "King of Philippine Roads." In these works, Wilwayco lends his exuberant imagination to a creative redefining of the iconic and timeless form of the jeepney. Unlike his British works, which failed to generate an impact on the local art scene, the Jeepney Fantasia works were lauded by the revered art critics of that time. Rod. Paras Perez lauds the technical aspects of Wilwayco's Jeepney Fantasia in the article 'Finessing the Jeepney,' published in the March 21, 1989 issue of The Manila Chronicle: "Bravura brushstrokes careen through his canvas, encountering sometimes, a fragment of a steering wheel or a colorful mini-altar or those in tin horses, which are the pride of many macho jeepney drivers. Paras-Perez perceives the distinct Filipino expression captured in Wilwayco's newfound theme: "By brushstrokes so structured they evoke the very chaos created on every street by these earthbound pilots who do not wish to fly. This is Pinoy neo-expressionism." Paras-Perez also remarks on the harmonious weaving of figuration and abstraction, writing that the jeepney's presence is "never completely defined; only suggested." Beyond his celebration of the dynamic jeepney, Wilwayco's attunement to the aesthetics of his native land is also discerned through his employment of maximalism, an inherent element in Filipino art. Emmanuel Torres notes in his article 'The Jeepney as Fantasy,' published in the February 25, 1989 issue of The Manila Chronicle, that Wilwayco's renditions of jeepneys are "an affirmation of Pinoy aesthetics with its penchant for filling in every available space with décor." Wilwayco engendered a visual extravaganza of warm colors that evoke the natural tropical environment of the Philippines. The dynamic visual poetry from Wilwayco's employment of a tropical palette dominated by the warmness of yellows, blues, greens, and reds resonates with the lived experience of the typical Filipino. It certainly enkindled not only refinement in Wilwayco's native sensibilities but a coming of age for him as well. Through his Jeepney Fantasia series, Wilwayco finally emerged as a virtuoso in his own right, able to make his distinct path and imprint in Philippine art. (A.M.)

The master abstractionist is best known for his impressive artistic explorations, trademark brushwork, gestural marks, and engaging chromatics. In his many thematic series, local culture, nationalism, and spirituality—also his focus on music and nature—are taken upon with his distinct vocabulary of color, form, and movement.One Saturday, Wilwayco saw his wife planting birds of paradise on the vacant lot which became a garden. Fascinated by this plant of multifaceted motion, Wilwayco then captured the unique stages of its growth through his signature lyrical abstraction, resulting in his 1990s Birds of Paradise series. His refreshing perspective on his lush subject is expressed by engaging abstract forms and captivating evergreen tropical color palette, as evident in this particular piece. This is one of his notable works out of his artistic shift from depicting the jeepney to birds of paradise, deconstructing and reconstructing the subject’s form out of second-nature intuition. The seasoned master was under top abstractionists during his student days in the UP Fine Arts, among which is Dean Jose Joya. Art critic Cid Reyes wrote: “After over three decades of sustained dedication to abstract painting, Edwin Wilwayco has emerged, in my estimation, as the rightful artistic heir to the late National Artist José Joya, pioneer of Abstract Expressionism in the country.” (J.D.)

Even during his days as a student at the University of the Philippines’ College of Fine Arts, Wilwayco was recognized for his disciplined and creative approach to the arts. His mentor’s abstractions, moreover, made an impact on the young Wilwayco’s early abstract techniques. When Jose Joya was commissioned to do a mural-size painting for the Philippine International Convention Center lobby in 1976, Wilwayco was among his students that the master artist tapped. Today, Wilwayco has undoubtedly followed in the footsteps of his mentors and teachers; creating visionary and engaging works of abstraction that seemingly play on the senses. This particular piece titled Octo Gravitas XVII is part of Wilwayco’s series of abstract works of the same name. The title of the series, which is derived from the latin words “eight” and “heaviness” respectively, informs both the execution and interpretation of the piece. Amidst Wilwayco’s assemblage of drips, brushstrokes, and paint splatters is a noticeably large figure of the number eight. Its size and dimensions lends Wilwayco’s central figure a pervading sense of presence. Though the central figure’s true essence is obscured by Wilwayco’s other elements, it remains conceivable even at a cursory glance, alluding to the idea that what can be cognized despite the context or circumstance is eternal. This idea is also supported by the fact that the shape of the figure eight is that of a closed loop; one that goes on and will go on forever no matter what. Wilwayco’s Octo Gravitas XVII presents us with an interesting proposition, that of the many and numerous ideals, Eternity is closest unto heaven.

For a great length of time, Wilwayco has focused on works of such composers as Vivaldi, Dvorak, Bach, Schubert, or with musical formats like Scherzo which this piece is taken inspiration to. Wilwayco with his predominant use of warm to vibrant shades of orange and red endows the piece with a fiery aura that captures the tirelessness of a youth spirit fused the musicality with his own soul and letting the painting develop according to his inner feelings and moods in which he didn’t have any color preference but finds them as he goes that’s why it is visible on his paintings that they are juxtaposed with various changing effects. His studies in UP was supported by his grandparents, and in his second year, he received the Celia Diaz Laurel scholarship that covered his tuition fees as he maintained a certain grade. Joya, Wilwayco recalled, would emphasize the importance of classical drawing. His mentor’s abstractions, moreover, made an impact on the young Wilwayco’s early abstract techniques. When Joya was commissioned to do a mural-size painting for the Philippine International Convention Center lobby in 1976, Wilwayco was among his students that the master artist tapped. It was also in 1976 when Wilwayco held his first solo show titled Images of Exuberance at the Hidalgo Gallery, Makati. Here, he exhibited his early abstract works influenced by Joya’s color tonalities and approaches to abstraction. This particular 1976 abstract piece is reminiscent of the early abstractions on the said show, displaying Wilwayco’s use of squares, rectangles, and circles as well as daring variations of curves and lines in his expressive compositions. Geometric shapes and engaging colors bring out a sense of memory and nostalgia in an intimate space, scene, and season.

Also seeing the blooms jutting near the window sill, he was attracted to the plant’s aesthetic appeal, with its shapes and colors of red, yellow, purple, and pink. Flowers are objects with a decorative allure, but Wilwayco instead opts for unleashing tension and a “pulsating element” in his series of Bird of Paradise paintings. Structurally, the sharp leaves in varied striking hues are masterfully rendered to capture movement. In these works, Wilwayco’s sensibilities as an abstract expressionist are highly evident.   Critic Paul Zafaralla wrote on Wilwayco’s choice of floral image: “Clearly, Wilwayco has lavishly served the needs and standards of colorito, though the distinctive form and shape of the heliconia, its disegno, in the erect, sharply flaring bracts, like a cockscomb, or in the pendent lobster-claws, drooping like a bunch of ripening fruits, conjure up other natural forms from a vegetative or sea world. For Wilwayco, this is form as fulcrum, with which to stage identifiable inferences.” This impressive 1991 piece features the celebrated abstractionist’s favored plant that serves as a metaphor for various moods and seasons and intimations of mortality, as noted by critic Cid Reyes. The overall composition of the flowers’ and leaves’ tips and edges, made more striking by color tonalities akin to nature’s hues, evoke a sculptural quality and a sense of mobility.

Thus, upon viewing his works, one cannot help but compare the gestural strokes and flourishes to the rhythmic pattern of a musical scale, or the concise movements of an adept orchestra conductor. In this triptych entitled Gaudeamus, Wilwayco draws inspiration from the work’s namesake. The Gaudeamus is a 13th-century Latin song that celebrates the joys of youth from the perspective of those who have lost it. Often performed in schools, universities, and other institutions of learning, the song’s moral is often interpreted as one that suggests we must take advantage of the fleeting moments of our youth. One can clearly see how Wilwayco perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the piece through his energetic strokes and dynamic gestures. His predominant use of warm to vibrant shades of orange and red endows the piece with a fiery aura that captures the tirelessness of a youth spirit. Though, much like the Latin hymn, Wilwayco understands that all good things must come to an end, hence his inclusion of dark patches around the canvas, symbolising the inevitability of time and the temporality of the soul. Though dour, Wilwayco’s piece is a hopeful one. In his triptych, Wilwayco encourages everyone to live one’s best life; a message that can be encapsulated in another Latin term: carpe diem.
