Most likely a scene painted after the biblical story of Jesus' interaction with Herod Antipas (Luke 23). Condition is good for the age. The board has not broken, but evidence of expansion and contraction is visible by the cracks in the oil paint. UV light shows no evidence of restoration or repairs. Signed in the bottom right corner "William E. Winner". Image measures roughly 28"L x 35"W in a wood frame 37.5"L x 44.5"W

SS 21 x 17 in.; DOA 26 x 22 in. The 1870 Philadelphia census lists a G. Wesley Winner, 20 years old, living with the portrait painter and his family. It also indicates that George was born in South Carolina. This portrait was likely completed circa 1855-1860 and depicts the composed young boy resting with his hoop.
