Robert Bateman's "Winter Mist- Great Horned Owl" Limited Edition Canvas

            Est: $600 - $700

Robert Bateman's "Winter Mist- Great Horned Owl" limited edition canvas signed and numbered 35/180. This canvas is in mint condition and has never been framed. "Most of my paintings are reconstructed from a variety of experiences and sources. But this incident actually took place outside our dining room window. It was on a foggy day during a midwinter thaw. This is the time of year when great horned owls do much of their territorial hooting. Because it takes a long time for such a large owl to reach maturity they must begin nesting during the snows of late winter. Although they normally hoot at night, this particular day was so dull that a pair of them were actively flying and hooting outside our house. This socialization accounts for the thrusting pose with the throat patch fluffed out. At first I painted this bird on a large interesting stump. However, in spite of the hours spent doing the texture of the stump, it gave the bird a posed, almost stuffed look. So I scraped down all my work and put in the diagonal branch to give it a dynamic thrust. The clump of beech leaves at the top of the picture is to emphasize the same effect." - Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman's "Winter Gathering - Horse Herd" Limited Edition Artist Proof Canvas Signed And Numbered

            Est: $725 - $850

Robert Bateman's "Winter Gathering - Horse Herd" limited edition artist proof canvas signed and numbered 23/40 AP. This canvas is in mint condition and has never been framed. "Horses have shared the history of humankind since earliest times. My mother was born into a world where horses were virtually the only form of land transportation other than using one’s own legs. Those days are now past in almost the entire world. However, horses still have a place as a satisfying form of outdoor recreation. Great enthusiasm for the breeding and keeping of horses in many parts of rural North America remains to this day. I saw this scene while driving through British Columbia ranchland one atmospheric winter day. The farmer had unloaded hay in a line from his tractor. This concentrated the feeding horses in a longitudinal clump. Since my abstract painting days, I have been attracted to black and white interlocking shapes reminiscent of the work of Franz Kline. That, to me, created the power of that central cluster of horses which I see as almost one form." - Robert Bateman

            Est: $1,750 - $1,950

Robert Bateman's "Winter Bison Showstopper" limited edition giclee canvas signed and numbered of an edition of 50. This is part of the 'showstopper' series due to its size. This oversized canvas is for a home with very large walls, or in a corporate seting like a reception area or boardroom. "It says something positive about North Americans' ability to remedy sins of the past that the bison has been pulled back from the brink of extinction. This magnificent animal was deliberately slaughtered in an effort to control and subjugate the Plains Indian nations. These people used bison skins for clothing and teepees as well as the meat as a major source of their diet. This slaughter reduced numbers to a few hundred. At present there are approximately 350,000 bison. Some herds are totally wild but many are now used commercially as a more environmental method of meat production. Yellowstone Park is perhaps even more spectacular in the winter than it is in the summer. This is the setting I have chosen for a mature bull looking over the brink of a cliff, unaware how close his species came to being wiped out." - Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman's "Deep Winter - Wolves" limited edition canvas signed and numbered of an edition of 180. This canvas is in mint condition and has never been framed. "One thing is certain, man is but a single strand in the web of life but humans are messing up the web. In the ral scheme of things nature is very large and also very mysterious. Our little brains cannot ever fully understand her. We move through the natural world, usually in a state of oblivion. Ninety-nine times out of a hundred, we are unaware of being observed. As in all of my paintings I try to capture a moment in time ... a moment that could have happened. I have imagined standing in a high elevation coniferous forest on a snowy moonlit night. In fact, the forest in question is at the Mount Washington Ski Resort in the middle of Vancouver Island. This area received more snowfall than any other ski resort in Canada in this particular year. Altough, of course, I did not see the wolves, I imagined a wolf pack, moving like shadows across the snow. Since I was very still and hidden, the wolves did not see me. But at the last moment the lead wolf sensed my presence and looked my way." - Robert Bateman

Robert Bateman's "Winter Coat" limited edition print. World-travelled and well versed, Bateman always tells a great story about each of his creations. Here is what he has to say about this piece: "I wanted to convey this landscape using large, empty white spaces that darken toward the top, while the dark trees are modulating in the opposite direction. Technically, I found this a particular challenge because I am so used to working with opaque paint, and I can paint light or pale lines over already painted dark areas. But working here with pencil, I had to do all my shading in between the light twigs." - Robert Bateman

In the snowy haze, only the closest two animals can be seen. The Alpha male looks out for prey or perhaps danger. His pose suggests health and confidence. His companion has noticed the viewer, but there is no expression of threat or fear. These are wolves as they should be - wild and free - masters of their own domain."- Robert Bateman

"In The 1980's we built a log cabin on a pond the beavers had made by damming a stream that flowed along the base of a cliff. This wall of Precambrian rock plunges to the water's edge. The pond is in a sheltered bowl and so the surface is almost always still. this produces a delightful view of cliff and reflections, always changing with the seasons and the time of day. Winter is one of our favorite times of year. From an artistic point of view it gives the pleasure of large interlocking dark and light shapes, without the confusing green chaos of summertime. Into this scene came a wolf, in my mind's eye. As in most of my paintings, I take a bit of landscape that appeals to me and introduce a bird or a mammal. I try to capture a moment that could have happened. In the millions of years that those rocks have stood there, a wolf could have come by that spot. Wolves do live in the area. I want the viewer to enjoy the magic of the place and then to notice the wolf. A moment later he will disappear." - Robert Bateman
