John Winters (American, 1904-1983) Untitled (Abstract Figures at the Art Museum) Signed and dated 1947 bottom left, casein on canvas. 16 x 20 in. (40.6 x 50.8cm) provenance: The Estate of the Artist, Springfield, Pennsylvania. note: "The period of much of my father's actual active life as an artist was rich with art calling attention to issues of social justice. But, although my parents were both liberal politically, this didn't inform their personal art. More a matter of "art for art's sake" as some say. In my father's case I think it had to do with personal expression, and was based on things he saw that interested him in his environment. He admired the work of other artists at different times in his life, and was influenced by them, I'm sure, but still made his work his own. His personal expression seemed to result in a certain mood in his work that I can't really put into words very well, of a pensive, somewhat remote, observer of life, as opposed to being actively in the thick of things. In person, socially, he did have that quality of observer. However, he was a very gentle, kind, patient person, often whimsical, playful and amused by things." - Diane Winters, the artist's daughter

(45.7 x 55.9cm) provenance: The Estate of the Artist, Springfield, Pennsylvania. note: This painting features a recurring character in Winters' paintings - the black cat, inspired by his family's pet Figaro. "The black cat was very much influenced by Figaro, who by this time had died. We had in Chicago another black cat during part of the same time, named Buttercup, who I was told was a very sweet soul, with longish fur, who loved flowers and was not particularly bright. It was Figaro, however who captivated them with his very high intelligence, cunning personality, and insistence on behaving as much as he could like a human. Buttercup used a cat pan and ate from a dish on the floor; Figaro would only use the toilet, straddling the seat, and wanted to eat at the table, sitting on a chair and only putting his front paws on the edge of the table. He would not actually climb up on the table as Buttercup did, since people did not do that. As you can tell from this, we're a family that has always indulged our cats (and dogs, guinea pigs, whatever)." - Diane Winters, the artist's daughter

This was also somewhat circular - making those sacrifices in turn reinforced the notion that they were warranted due to the importance of 'the work.'" - Diane Winters, the artist's daughter
