CIVIL WAR GENERAL HENRY A. WISE SIGNED LETTER OF PROMOTION

      Est: -

Civil War General Henry A. Wise Signed Letter of Promotion. Autographed letter from Virginia Governor Henry A. Wise concerning the promotion of Joseph Godlove to First Lieutenant in the 14th Regiment of the 18th Brigade and 3rd Division of Virginia Militia. The letter reads, " The Commonwealth of Virginia, To Joseph Godlove, Greeting: Know you, that from special trust and confidence reposed in your fidelity, courage and good conduct, our Governor, in pursuance of the authority vested in him by the Constitution of Laws of this Commonwealth, doth commission you a First Lieutenant in the 14th Regiment of the 18th Brigade and 3rd Division of the Virginia Militia, to tank as such from the 28th, day of September 1858. In testimony whereof, Ii have hereunto signed my name as Governor, and caused the Seal of the Commonwealth to be affixed, this 14th day of September1859. Henry A. Wise" On the back of the letter is a handwritten statement from the judge that presided over the swearing in of Joseph Godlove. Henry A. Wise was a lawyer, a member of the United States House of Representatives (1832–1844), U.S. minister to Brazil (1844–1847), governor of Virginia (1856–1860) during John Brown‘s raid on Harpers Ferry, and a brigadier general in the Confederate army during the American Civil War (1861–1865). Henry A. Wise began his political life with a duel. He shot and severely wounded his opponent for Congress. He served from 1833 to 1844, developing a reputation as a hot-headed, fiery orator. He is best known for being the governor during the trial of famous abolitionist John Brown. Because of his political prominence and secessionist reputation Wise was appointed Brigadier General-and later promoted to the rank of Major Genera in the Confederate Army, despite his complete lack of military experience. After the war Wise resumed his law career. He died on September 12, 1876, in Richmond. Keywords: Antique, Civil War, Milia; Ref: BD2022

      Est: $300 - $500

Good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Corp. John C. Barton, Co. C, 23rd Ohio Vols. (President Rutherford B. Hayes' command), Weston, Lewis Co., [West] Virginia, Aug. 26, [61], reading, in part: "…we have marched over 200 miles since last I wrote…had several small skirmishes…we shall probably stay here and hold possession of Weston…we have encamped in the following places…Clarksburgh, Weston, Birch Creek…& Summerville…we have been within a mile of Wises' forces but they retreated beyond our reach before we could surround them. We will probably remain here until after the Battle of Manassas Gap and then go down into Tennessee…Weston is county seat of Lewis County situated on a branch of the Monongeholy River and almost surrounded by mountains. It was designated to be one of the largest places in Western Virginia…the most splendid piece of architecture…was intended for a deaf, dumb and blind asylum…is over 1300 feet in length…built of grey sand stone but they are doing nothing at it now. When we first came here the inhabitants had mostly deserted but…most of them come back…today we had the company of several ladies at church. We have taken several prisoners…some of them will be sent to Camp Chase, others have took the oath of allegiance and returned to their homes…J. C. Barton, Commissary Corporal, Co. C, 23 Rig. O. V. U. S. A…". Usual soiling, else VG

      HENRY A. WISE

      Est: $700 - $900

HENRY A. WISE (1806 - 1876) Confederate brigadier general and Governor of Virginia who sent John Brown to the gallows. He died never accepting amnesty. Fine content war-date L.S., 2pp. 4to., Petersburg, June 14, 1864 to fellow Brigadier Gen. RALEIGH COLSTON. Five days after the First Battle of Petersburg in which Colston''s rag-tag Home Guard had held off a concerted Union attack until relieved, Wise congratulates his comrade-in-arms. In part: "...my thanks for the efficient and gallant part you bore in the affair on the 9th. You tendered your services on the field, in any duty...and I placed you in command on the right.relying on your experience and skill to guide the militia...in supplying their want of discipline, and that their confidence would be increased, as it was, by your presence and example...you held the militia, as long as regulars and veterans could have been held...saving the retreat, after having seized a musket, and fired upon the enemy with your own hand, and after two men had been shot from the sadlle of your own horse...you shared their danger to the last, and doubtless taught them how to win glory...". The Home Guard, a group consisting primarily of teenagers, elderly men, and some wounded soldiers from city hospitals, took heavy losses, but held off the attack until relieved by Beauregard.
