      Studio of Willem Wissing,  Dutch 1656-1687-  Portrait of William Henry, Prince of Orange and Nassau, bust length, in feigned oval;  oil on canvas, bears label on the reverse inscribed 'LADY MATHEW WILSON / 24 6 35' verso, 76.3 x 64 cm.  Provenance:  The collection of Lady Mathew Wilson.  Until sold at Christie's South Kensington, 13 November 2003, lot 10, as 'Follower of Sir Peter Lely'.  After which at Appleby Castle, Cumbria.  Note:  The present work bears a striking resemblance to Wissing's portrait of William III, Prince of Orange and Nassau, (1650-1702) which is now in the collection of the Holburne Museum in Bath [A10].

Lely', listed in the Middle South-East Bedroom, Duff House.  Note:  Laurence Hyde (1641-1711) was made 1st Earl of Rochester of the second creation in 1682 after a period as Master of the Robes to Louis XIV between 1662 and 1675 and then election to the new English parliament as member for Wootton Bassett in 1679.  Hyde was the brother-in-law of James II (1633-1701) through his sister, the king's first wife, Anne Hyde (1637-1671), and, as such, the uncle of Queen Mary II (1662-1694) and Queen Anne (1665-1714). Initially a supporter of James II, in 1688 Hyde backed the Glorious Revolution, after which he devoted his attention to the church, becoming advisor in ecclesiastical matters to his niece Mary II.

That portrait was one of a pair depicting the Prince and Princess of Orange (1662-1694), later William III and Mary II, commissioned by Mary's father, James II (1633-1701) in 1685.

Dieses Damenporträt, welches in der Vergangenheit als ein Werk des deutsch-britischen Hofmalers Godfrey Kneller (1646–1723) angesehen wurde, konnte nach Prüfung mit Dr. Karen Hearn als ein Werk von Willem Wissing, einem niederländischen Künstler, der auch in Grossbritannien tätig war, identifiziert werden. Die Haltung der Porträtierten und die Form ihres Kleides sind Elemente, die Wissing in seinen Frauenporträts mehrfach wiederholt hat, so beispielsweise in den Porträts von Mrs. Lawson (Royal Collection Trust, Inv.-Nr. RCIN 402580) oder von Mrs. Nott (Royal Collection Trust, Inv.-Nr. RCIN 402573), die um 1680–85 entstanden und Teil der königlichen Sammlung Grossbritanniens sind. Unser Gemälde kann auch mit dem um 1687 entstandenen Porträt einer unbekannten Dame verglichen werden, welches sich im Metropolitan Museum in New York befindet (Inv.-Nr. 39.65.7). Dr. Karen Hearn bestätigt die Eigenhändigkeit anhand einer Fotografie, wofür wir ihr danken. ---------------

      PORTRAIT EINER VORNEHMEN DAME ALS MINERVA Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 127 x 102 cm. In vergoldetem Rahmen. Dreiviertelportrait einer eleganten Dame, hier mit den Attributen der römischen Göttin Minerva mit großem Schild, auf das sie ihren linken Unterarm stützt, und einem Speer in ihrer rechten Hand wiedergegeben. Sie trägt zudem ein langes Kleid mit weitem Dekolleté, das am Rand mit Spitze besetzt und mit Schmuck verziert ist. Sie hat ein zartes, helles Inkarnat und hat ihren Kopf mit den fast schwarzen Haaren, auf denen sie einen großen Federbausch trägt, zur Seite gewandt und blickt mit ihren dunklen Augen aus dem Bild heraus. Qualitätvolle Malerei bei der durch den starken Hell-Dunkel-Kontrast Gesicht, Arme und Dekolleté der Dargestellten besonders hervorgehoben werden. Wenige minimale Retuschen. Anmerkung: Verso auf Rahmen Aufkleber mit Verweis „from the Wanstead Collection 1822“. He was the third and only surviving son of Sir George Rawdon, 1st baronet, and his second wife, Dorothy, eldest daughter of the 2nd Viscount Conway. He spent some time as a boy in France with a tutor, probably as much on account of his delicate health as for his education. He married, in 1682, Ellen Graham (1663-1710), daughter and heir of the Hon. Sir James Graham of Congleton in Cheshire. He was sheriff of Co. Down in 1692, and sat for the county in the Irish parliament in 1692 and 1695.

Condition report: Oil on canvas which has been lined. There is a canvas patch on the reverse securing a tear. The painting is in a good condition overall. There is a general network of age cracks which are all stable and secure. The varnish is clear and even. There are localised areas of retouching. The frame is in a good condition.
