This small oil painting by Gustav Wittschas shows a huge oak with a broad path leading up to it through a meadow. Three walkers are resting beneath the tree's shadow. The artist shows a few trees swaying in the wind and clouds in the sky in the background. In an expert manner does Wittschas capture the atmosphere of the hot summer's day amidst the great landscape. The painting is in good condition, with only one flaw next to the oak on the right side. The original frame opens at the bevels an is slightly nicked in the corners. The painting is signed in the lower right "G. Wittschas" and inscribed and titled on the back "G. Wittschas, Eichen im Hochsommer" ("G. Wittschas, Oaks in Midsummer"). The overall dimensions, framed, are 63.5 x 73.5 cm, the dimensions of the stretcher frame are 50.5 x 60.5 cm. Gustav Wittschas (geb. 1868) Gustav Wittschas painted landscapes and flower still lifes. He studied in Königsberg (C. Steffeck, E. Neide) and Düsseldorf (P. Janssen, A. Kampf). He is mainly known for his paintings of the Curonian Spit.
