      Wocher, Marquard Fidel Dominicus 1760 Mimmenhausen - 1830 Basel. «François Barthelemy, Ambassadeur de la Republique Françoise en Suisse». Watercolour and gouache over pencil on yellowish wove paper. Signed lower middle and dated 1796. H 12, W 8,5 cm (sheet). Gilt frame. François Barthélemy started his political career in the diplomatic service. As ambassador to Switzerland he was in charge of the affairs in the eventful 1790s. He later was active as a politician in the French Republic. The Swiss painter and miniature painter Marquard Wocher created here a portrait vignette of the politician, as it was a common type of art at the time of the French Revolution. Condition report: Good overall condition. Paper evenly slightly browned. Several slight handling creases (approx. 1 to 2 cm) upper and lower right, upper corners with minor paper blemishments. The work was not unframed. DEUTSCH: Wocher, Marquard Fidel Dominicus 1760 Mimmenhausen - 1830 Basel. «François Barthelemy, Ambassadeur de la Republique Françoise en Suisse». Aquarell und Gouache über Bleistift auf gelblichem Velin. Mitte u. sign. und 1796 dat. H. 12, B. 8,5 cm (Blattgröße). Vergolderrahmen. Seine politische Karriere begann François Barthélemy im diplomatischen Dienst. Als Botschafter in der Schweiz führte er die Geschäfte in den ereignisreichen 1790er Jahren. Später war er als Politiker der Französischen Republik tätig. Der Schweizer Maler und Minaturist Marquard Wocher fertigte hier eine Porträt-Vignette des Politikers an, wie sie als Kunstgattung zur Zeit der Französischen Revolution sehr gefragt war. Zustandsbericht: Guter Gesamteindruck. Papier gleichmäßig leicht gebräunt. O.r. und u.r. mehrere leichte Griffknicke (ca. 1 bis 2 cm), obere Ecken mit min. Papierläsuren. Das Werk wurde nicht ausgerahmt.

Sämtlich datiert: 1796 (Anna Maria Wocher), 1800 (Rudolph Fatio), 1814 (Nepomuk Wocher), 1814 (Marquard Wocher). -- -- Zunächst Schüler seines Vaters Tiberius Wocher fand Marquard Wocher im Anschluss eine Anstellung in Bern bei Johann Ludwig Aberli. 1782 zieht er nach Basel und macht sich selbstständig. Das Porträt der Gattin ist verso wohl eigenhändig bezeichnet "Anna Maria Wocher / geborene Fatio / Gezeichnet Anno 1796". Marquard Wocher heiratete die Witwe des Architekten Johann Ulrich Büchel im Jahr 1800. Das Bildnis des Schwagers ist verso bezeichnet "J. Rudolph Fatio. / Gezeichnet am 10.       Ruine einer gotischen Kirche im Mondschein. Aquarell über Feder in Grau, montiert. 18,7 x 25,2 cm. Auf dem Untersatzkarton bezeichnet "Wocher". Effektvoll beleuchtet das durch die Wolken brechende Mondlicht die Klosterruine und verleiht dieser wildromantischen Landschaft eine geheimnisvolle Atmosphäre. Die Mauern der Ruine mit filigranem, gotischem Fensterwerk erinnert dem romantischen Topos entsprechend an Bauwerke wie die Klosterruine am Oybin im Zittauer Gebirge, die wir eindringlich aus den Gemälden Caspar David Friedrichs oder Carl Gustav Carus' kennen.
