WOEIRIOT, Pierre (1532-ca 1596). Pinax iconicus antiquorum ac variorum in sepulturis ex Lilio Gregorio excerpta. Edited by Clemént Baudin. Lyon: Clemént Baudin, 1556. Oblong 8υo (115 x 160 mm). 9 full-page engravings by Pierre Woeiriot. (Title mounted, lacking engraved self-portrait of Woeriot and dedication leaf, text leaf E1 and E4 blank.) 19th-century citron morocco gilt (lightly rubbed). Provenance: Edward Arnold (armorial bookplate); acquired from Ray E. Lewis, 1978. FIRST EDITION of one of Woeiriot's earliest works, and the first publication recorded for Baudin. It is probable that Baudin himself adapted the text from Lilio Gregorio Giraldi's De sepulchris et vario sepeliendi ritu. "The plates are extraordinarily rich in detail. The artist has included as background a view of Lyon from the château of Béchevelin in plate 6, the château of La Mothe in plate 7, and the farm of La Ferrandière in plate 8. The use of contemporary views is acknowledged in the text" (Mortimer French 555). Not in Fairfax Murray or Rothschild. Brunet V:1469.
