Beginning in 1920, the annual Salzburg Festival has brought five weeks of concerts, opera and drama to the birthplace of Mozart in the Austrian Alps. For its eighth season, Vienna Academy-educated Leopoldine Wojtek created this post-secessionist design for the event. Wojtek referenced the proud heritage of Salzburg and its people, while evoking the burgeoning modernity and artistry of the festival, by combining a comedy mask with a stylized view of the Hohensalzburg Fortress and Salzburg flag. The metallic golden image proved a striking and enduring embodiment of the event, and serves as the official emblem to the present day. Metiers No. 19, 1930 n.p.
