It is generally accepted that any form of civilization is connected with the use of certain types and systems of signs. These determine the working of the human mind, because an innate disposition leads man to unravel, explain and use these signs. Language and sign are closely related; witness the sign language. In the past people used the terms "word" and "sign" randomly; both had the purpose of conveying a thought.

Harry Wolfkamp emphasizes writing and gesture in his work. Wolfkamp focuses on the actual characteristics of painting, which are expressed between the psychological and physical aspects. Spiritual rapture finds discharge in the work in the passionate handling of paint, form, color and writing. Drifts and passions are thus evoked during the creative process and find discharge Wolfkamp works further towards a balanced composition.
