Panofsky relates this work to a group in the Dürer blocks for the Narrenschiff. Albrecht Dürer was working in the workshop of Wohlgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff in the years 1486-1489 when many of the early designs for the Chronicle were made. About the subject: 'The dance of the impious' or 'Coreizantes per annum shows a group of people who miraculously danced from Christmas Eve till after New Year without interruption. Cfr. Panofsky a woman and a young man ecstatically pointing upwards, have been changed so as to anticipate some early works by Dürer, particularly the ... group in the "Narrenschiff". If Dürer is not responsible for the "Coreizantes" woodcut himself, which is difficult to decide because of the cutting, he must have greatly benefited by it. Old colored woodcut from the first edition of Hartmann Schedel, "Liber Cronicarum", printed by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg on 12 July 1493. The apostle Jacob, also called James, is one of the two apostles whose remains have been found. According to legend, he died in the year 44 of our era. His body is said to have been placed on a ship that washed up in northern Spain. He became patron saint of Spain and Santiago de Compostella is build on the spot of hiss supposed grave. On the woodcut the Saint is dresses as a pilgrim, and thus breaks with the uniformity in the clothing of the other Apostles. On the raised part of the brim of the Apostle's hat, the pilgrim scallop stands out. Est: €900 - €1,500

Two impressive Old colored woodcuts from the Sixth and Seventh day of creation involving Albrecht Durer for the design, most notable in the four winds. The woodcuts are on recto and verso of a sheet from the first edition of Hartmann Schedel, "Liber Cronicarum", from 12 July 1493. The wood blocks were designed by Michael Wolgemut and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff and their assistants, including the young Albrecht Dürer, who was apprenticed to Wolgemut at the time. The printing was carried out under the supervision of the great scholar-printer Anton Koberger, who was Dürer's godfather. Wohlgemut was Albrecht Dürer's tutor between 1486-90. The young Dürer was working in the workshop in the years 1486-1489 when many of the early designs for the Chronicle were made and he was probably involved in a certain amount of them. In the case of this 'creation of Man - work of the sixth day, the sketch was previously not found in the archives known to contain drawings by Wolgemut and his workshop. Only in 1972 it was rediscovered on the end papers of two volumes of the Koberger German bible of 1483 in the Nuremberg City Library. These design drawing for the seven days of creation still exist. The drawer of the designs is not identified but possibly involves Albrecht Dürer. This attribution is supported by the striking resemblance of the four winds in the woodcut for the Sanctification of the Seventh Day who are attributed to Dürer by Dr. Sladecsek based on the comparison with the winds on plate 7 of Dürer's Apocalypse woodcut. (See Adrian Wilson - 1976: The making of the Nuremberg Chronicle, p.94.). Here we have a fine oldcoloured example of this impressive woodcuts from the old colored luxury editions of the Cronicarum who were of the most expensive ones.

Nuremberg Chronicle Frontispiece - God the Fathers enthroned - related Dürer drawing - 1490

The opening woodcut of Genesis. God said Let there Be and all things were made (Translation from the Latin text in the banderolle "Ipse dixit et facta sunt: ipse mandavit et creata sunt, Psalm 32". Impressive old colored woodcut from the first edition of Hartmann Schedel, "Liber Cronicarum", from 12 July 1493. Here God the Father sitting on a throne, wearing a head-dress resembling a papal tiara and holding an orb in his left hand, a scroll above and below an empty banderolle with on either side of which are two wild men holding shields with unidentified coat of arms, at the top a decorative border of entwined branches and naked figures. In the case of this 'God the Father Enthroned ', there is a related drawing in the British Museum attributed since 1885 to Wolgemut but Adrian Wilsons points out in his 'The making of the Nuremberg Chronicle - 1976' that the drawing in fact is to subtle in its delineation and shading and superior to any drawing attributed to Wolgemut and its rendering should be attributed to the young Dürer. His conclusion is that a basic intital design for the woodcut was made by Wolgemut but Dürer tried his hand at copying his master's work in 1490, the date on the drawing .So the interaction with Durer is evident but the woodcut probably followed the more rude earlier basic drawing and quite some of the finesse was also lost when carving the woodblock. (See Adrian Wilson - 1976, The making of the Nuremberg Chronicle, p.76). On the backside we have the Prologue in Latin with the Summary of the Work of the Six Days including a very nice hand painted initial in red and blue, following the text entirely lettered by Hartman nSchedel in his handwritten design page. Here we have a fine oldcoloured example of this impressive woodcut from the old colored luxury editions of the Cronicarum who were of the most expensive ones.

        Est: $1,000 - $2,000

About the Engraving: This famous woodcut was engraved by Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519) and entitled "Septima etas mudi." The image is said to be a depiction of the Apocalypse or Armageddon with a battle with the Antichrist. Armageddon (the apocalyptic battle at the end of times between good and evil) where God defeats the Antichrist and Archangel Michael is in battle with the dragon. Based on further reading about the engraving, the Antichrist might be a depiction of the Fall of Simon Magus or Simon the Sorcerer. Simon was a Samaritan grifter that claimed to be an incarnation of God that used levitation to convert a following to Simonainism. Peter eventually converts Simon, but he asks to buy the powers of the Apostles and thus the sin of "Simony" was created. His sotry is referred to in Acts 8:9–24. About the work: This important and historic engraving is from Hartmann Schedel Liber Chronicarum, more commonly known as the Nuremberg Chronicle. This is the first edition / printing of the work. It is the Latin edition that was published 6 months prior to the German edition. Both editions were limited to 2000 printings. It was published in Nuremberg in 1493 by Anton Koberger for Sebald Schreyer and Sebastian Kammermeister. The work included numerous illustrations that were completed by Michael Wolgemut, Wilhelm Pleydenwurff, and members of their workshop. This very likely included the young Albrecht Dürer as well. The work included maps and town views, but also chronicles historic information including the invention of the printing press, development of the game of chess, navigational voyages, and important constructions. Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514) was a German writer, physician, and book collector. He is most remembered for his famous work Liber Chronicarum or Nuremberg Chronicle. He published some of the first printed views of many cities.

Panofsky attributes the drawing for this work to the Albrecht Dürer, who was working in the workshop of Wohlgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff in the years 1486-1489 when many of the early designs for the Chronicle were made. About the subject: During his Odyssey, Ulysses rmet the golden-haired magician Circe who lived on the Aeaea Island in the Adriatic Sea. She lured the sailors to the island with her singing and gave them wine mixed with a magic potion. She did the same with Ulysses' s companions, transforming them into animals. But she did not manage to cast a spell on Ulysses who had taken an antidote. Then she accomplished his demand and turned his companions into humans again. Ulysses passed a year on Circe's island.

Very fine, strong impression. Michael Wohlgemut (1434-1519), who is now best known as Dürer's teacher, designed and probably also cut these woodcuts (fol. 18) for the edition of Stephan Fridolin's "Schatzbehalter der wahren Reichtümer des Heils", printed in 1491 by Anton Koberger. The incunable is considered as one of the most beautiful early print projects of the Nuremberg book industry. The book included many full-page woodcuts by Wolgemut and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff and would be influential on the development of Dürer's linear woodcut style. The verso side of the woodcut depicts the vision of Daniel. The folio is an original woodcut from the first edition of 1491. Ref. ISTC is00306000. - GW 10329.- Polain(B) 1521.
