However, by 1910, influenced by the movements in modern art both in Britain and on the continent, Wolmark had embarked upon a more radical and vibrantly coloured path. He participated in Roger Fry's seminal exhibition Manet and the Post Impressionists at the Grafton Galleries in 1910, with his work hanging alongside that of Van Gogh. In the summer of 1911, he and his new wife spent their honeymoon at Concarneay in Brittany. It was a trip that would transform Wolmark's painting and cement him as one of the pioneers of the modernist movement in England. Concarneau and the surrounding area was already a popular destination with artists. As never before, Wolmark was exposed to the French Avant-Garde and was profoundly influenced by the Fauves' strong use of colour and fluid composition. He worked prodigiously throughout the ten week trip producing around ninety canvasses. He took as his subject matter the local fisher people such as the present lot, as well as the bustling markets, port and rugged coastal landscape. The work that Wolmark produced in 1911 is some of his best and most significant of his career. The rawness and immediacy of these compositions reveal Wolmark's excitement at having found this new artistic direction. They exude an energy that the young painter undoubtedly felt for his newfound style.

Alfred Aaron WOLMARK (1877-1961) The red cow Oil on panel Signed lower left 40.5 x 51 cm Provenance Christie's sale of the artist's studio collection, February 28, 1983, London Private collection, Paris Born in Warsaw, Poland, Wolmark emigrated to London before training as an artist at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in the 1890s, where he exhibited his work between 1901 and 1936. He returned briefly to Poland in 1903. In his native land, he created works centered on his Jewish identity, in which he idealized the peaceful, contemplative elements of his religion. In 1911, while in France, he was struck by the modernity of French painting, and this was reflected in his palette and style, which became known as Post-Impressionist. He was also one of the English Fauves. His work, totally impacted by color, enabled him to take his color division to a higher level than any of his contemporaries. Wolmark transforms his subjects using flattened forms, constructed with a thickening of the brushstroke. His mastery and use of vivid colors earned him the title of "King of Color". In La vache rouge, the painter is still in the midst of his research into color and tonal separation. He experimented with the three primary colors (red, blue and yellow), making them confront and oppose each other on the canvas by placing them side by side. Not only a painter, Wolmark also created costume and set designs for Diaghilev's ballets in 1911 and illustrated the complete works of writer Israel Zangwill. He also tried his hand at stained glass, producing abstract designs for St. Mary's parish church in Slough in 1915 and painted vase decoration the following year. Est: £1,000 - £1,500

Alfred Wolmark,  Polish/British 1877-1961 -  Flowers in a vase with a bowl, 1943;  oil on canvas board, signed and dated on the reverse 'Alfred A Wolmark 1943', 40.3 x 30.3 cm (ARR)  Provenance:  Rena Behrman and thence by descent  Note:  Rena Behrman (1909-2017) helped to aid the escape of more than 1000 Jewish refugees from Europe to Britain during the Second World War. Items from her collection were donated to the British Museum.  Wolmark was famed for his bold colour palette, influenced by French Modernism, and in an early exhibition in the 1910s at the International Society of Artists, his work was placed beside Vincent Van Gogh, as the only artist of comparable intensity. Wolmark also exhibited at the influential 'Manet and the Post-Impressionists' exhibition at the Grafton Gallery in 1910, organised by Roger Fry.  Wolmark has been referred to as the 'father' of the Whitechapel Boys. He was the only artist to be included in both the Whitechapel Art Gallery's 1906 'Jewish Art and Antiquities Exhibition' and in David Bomberg and Jacob Epstein's 'Jewish Section' at the 1914 exhibition 'Twentieth-Century Art: A Review of Modern Movements'.
