Attributed to Dean Wolstenholme, Senior,  Full Cry

      Est: £500 - £700

Attributed to Dean Wolstenholme, Senior,  British 1757-1837-  Full Cry;  oil on canvas, 30.6 x 41 cm.  Provenance:  with Frost & Reed, Bristol, no.918.  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  The present painting, presumably taken in or around Essex or Hertfordshire, is characteristic of Wolstenholme's oeuvre, with the artist acting as a key figure in the development of the hunting picture, a genre which had a significant impact on the artistic landscape of 18th-century Britain. It exhibits the characteristics which define the artist's distinct, somewhat stylised, approach. This is evident particularly in the sinuous, elongated bodies of the hounds which imbue the scenes with a palpable sense of energy and momentum.

Dean Wolstenholme, Snr, British 1757-1837 Hunting Scenes: Setting Out; Flushing Out; On the Scent; and The Kill; oils on canvas, each 47.4 x 65.5 cm., a set of four (4). Note: The present paintings, presumably taken in or around Essex or Hertfordshire, are characteristic of Wolstenholme's oeuvre, with the artist acting as a key figure in the development of the hunting picture, a genre which had a significant impact on the artistic landscape of 18th-century Britain. This set of four pictures exhibits the characteristics which define the artist's distinct, somewhat stylised, approach. This is evident in the long, sinuous lines of the trees, alongside the elongated bodies of the hounds which are depicted throughout. Indeed, these exaggerated forms imbue the scenes with a palpable sense of energy and momentum. A comparable set of four oils by the artist of 'The Essex Hunt' sold at Christie's, London, 13 November 2019, lot 206 ( £15,000).
