Provenance:-Auction, Venduehuis, The Hague, 5 November 1996, lot 139. , This painting is known as a geography wall plaque that used to grace many Dutch classrooms. They were published as of 1912 by Noordhoff publishers in Groningen. Shown is the Delfhavense Schie with the Spaanse Polder and the city of Schiedam at the horizon. Two corn mills can also be discerned here, and in the water a ‘spoelingschuit’ (rinse barge) with which farmers brought ‘spoeling’ from the city to their land. Spoeling (swill) was a typical product of the jenever town of Schiedam: this by-product of the malt wine distilleries was used as cattle feed.

Vermey, 1944, thence by descent - Private collection, the Netherlands Note: Hendrik Jan Wolter specialised in painting impressionistic and true-to-life cityscapes. He received his training in Antwerp and resided for a long time in the Gooi region, where he was part of the artist circle around Hotel Hamdorff in Laren, alongside Jan Sluijters, Co Breman, and Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig. Wolter's keen observation extended beyond cities; he frequently depicted the lively maritime activity along the Thames, skilfully capturing its nuances of light and atmosphere with a misty, greyish colour palette. Charmingly, the present painting was given to Lies Vermey, his neighbour from across the Torenlaan in Laren. The work remained in the collection of the family for many decades.

Note: Hendrik Jan Wolter was born in Amsterdam. In 1885, the Wolter family relocated to Amersfoort, where Wolter discovered his love for painting, and frequently depicted the city's scenes. In Amersfoort he painted distinct cityscapes, particularly focusing on the Zuid- and Westsingel, characterized by warm brown and earthy tones. Wolter’s Market Day in Amersfoort, we see these brown and earthy tones, an everyday scene where people come together on a vibrant market place. Examples of his Amersfoort works can also be admired at the Museum Flehite in Amersfoort where his works are permanently displayed. In many paintings the warmth of the Midi is almost tangible. An exception in his oeuvre is this large painting that he made in 1938 of the procession at the chapel Sainte Anne-la-Palud in Plonévez-Porzay, France. An unusual subject, for which he painted crowds of people at the gray church during the pardon, which is a typically Breton form of pilgrimage. The present lot shows the old city hall of Middelburg around 1934. This image has often been used for school plates and pictures in geography text books.
