    • Salon des Cent. 1897.
      Feb. 23, 2020

      Salon des Cent. 1897.

      Est: $1,400 - $1,700

ARTIST: ANDREW K. WOMRATH (1869-?) SIZE: 13 3/4 x 19 1/4 in./35 x 48.7 cm DESCRIPTION: The only known poster by this artist, the design wittily undermines conventions at the annual Salon des Cent. While most artists promoting this exhibition have focused on women in contemplation, Womrath takes a different tack: a gentleman is rapt with attention at the shape of a vase while a woman looks on, dreamily with slight interest, as her hand leafs through drawings or paintings, possibly of nude men. This is a pochoir print. (Art Nouveau; Exhibitions)

    • Salon des Cent.
      May. 03, 2009

      Salon des Cent.

      Est: $1,400 - $1,700

"Andrew Kay Womrath was an American artist who studied in New York, London and Paris. This is his only known poster, showing a woman leafing through some prints while a man admires a vase. She is dressed conventionally enough, while the man, judging by his Van Dyke and floppy cravat, is either an artist or would be bohemian" (Gold, p. 134). The broad appeal of the artwork on display hinted at is reinforced by fact that a February/March tip-on was included in a later version of the poster: Originally slated to run only for the month of January, the popularity of the event demanded a two-month extension (see PAI-XXXI, 634).
