  • Wong Hoy Cheong (b. 1960) Man Carrying Sack, 1995

Wong Hoy Cheong (b. 1960) Man Carrying Sack, 1995

    Est: RM25,000 - RM40,000

The painting, Man Carrying Sack, embodies the plight of the immigrant with the sack seen as a burden, life's symbolic albatross, more precarious as the labourer has no national or societal status. It is only one in Wong Hoy Cheong's landmark exhibition, Of Migrants & Rubber Trees, where the migrant is shown in action, unlike the bevy of portraits posed notoriously like Wanted Criminals. Of note is they are drawings, in charcoal on paper, like black-and-white photographs for a sense of veracity. The issues of migration, displacement, dislocation and perpetual quest for a better life are very real. The series' anecdotal works of glum and even surly faces are described as "unhappy pictures", with a bit nostalgia, a bit sarcasm and a bit heroic even. Wong Hoy Cheong catapulted back to national visual art prominence when he won the Anugerah Karyawan Seni Visual in 2024. He was named Newsweek's Top 10 Trail-blazers of Asia ('Maverick and Rebels') in 2000 and Top 10 Art & Culture Leaders in the Next Millennium in 1999. He even had the 35th Floor of Deutsch Bank Headquarters in Frankfurt named after him, while Cornell University had a scholarship, H.C. Wong Scholarship, named after him in 'Outstanding Educator. He received his Masters at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (Fine Art, Painting) and Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts (Education), and BFA magna cum laude at the Brandeis University, USA, in 1982. He won the Australian Cultural Award in 1992. His international exhibitions include ARS 01 (Helsinki), Kwangju Biennale, Cities On The Move (Vienna), Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (Denmark), Hayward Gallery (London), Fukuoka Triennial and the Asia-Pacific Triennial.

8000, Wong Hoy Cheong (1960), A portrait Madan Lama from Pokhara, Nepal, charcoal on paper, 127x90 cm, Wong Hoy Cheong (Penang, Malaysia, in 1960) In an attempt to escape the solitude and stasis of painting, Wong employs mediums that he considers collaborative, and which effectively mix historical depth with human immediacy; he works in drawing, photography, video, installation, and performance. During the 1990s, he developed an interest in the migration of plants. This inquiry led him to investigate human migration and the related subjects of race, colonization, and indigeneity. Wong blurs the divide between fact and fiction in a deliberately unreliable representation of so-called history. In his manipulated images Wong depicts migrant populations and traces the changing face of ordinary life while excavating the obscured cultural histories of marginalized communities elsewhere in the world. Wong's practice is often concerned with exploring Malaysian identity in such indirect ways. In his view Malaysia is one of the world's most multi-ethnic and multicultural nations. Wong's artistic practice has been influenced by his education in the United States, which provided a new perspective in his areas of concern. He has exhibited in the most prestigious museums and art exhibitions to mention just a few such as: the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (1997); Fukuoka Asian Art Triennial, Japan (1999 and 2009); Venice Biennale (2003); Liverpool Biennial (2004); Guangzhou Triennial, China (2005); Naked Life, Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei (2006); Taipei Biennial (2008) etc. Wong lives and works in Kuala Lumpur. The outside light on the window draws attention to the abject living conditions inside the claustrophobic room with four half-naked figures wallowing in self-pity. The stark monochrome aura adds to the negative vibes of despair, self- doubt, sloth and irritability, with the only bright spot being the rhomboid patterns of the sarong. Ah well, maybe a little divine intervention from the Hanuman-looking idol on the top far left could help change their fortunes. The figures are rendered in the same Gaugainesque fashion as when multi-disciplinary genius artist Wong Hoy Cheong just returned from achieving a double Masters in his studies in the United States. Same light afforded by the abject living conditions rhomboid angularity. This work was shown in the exhibition, Selected Paintings And Drawings 1982-1991, at The Gallery, Theatre Works, Fort Canning Hill, Singapore. Wong Hoy Cheong is one of the country’s most international high profiled celebrated contemporary artists with solos all over the world, and even a retrospective in Taiwan. He took part in the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003. He studied for his Masters at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (Fine Art, Painting) and Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts (Education), and received his Bachelor of Arts magna cum laude at the Brandeis University, USA, in 1982.
