        21 3/4" tall, base is 7 1/4" by 7 1/4". Jack D. Woods (1930 - 2011) was active/lived in New Mexico. Jack Woods is known for Sculpture and painting, aeronautical design engineer. Jack D. Woods died peacefully in Albuquerque, New Mexico on April 10, 2011, following a brief illness. Jack was born on March 29, 1930 in Tucumcari, NM, the son of Roy & Althea Woods. As a child in Tucumcari, Jack was a tireless artist, drawing and making carvings in bars of soap. His sights were set on art school, but the Korean War took him on an alternate path. After serving his country, Jack studied mechanical engineering and entered the air and space industry. In 1951 he married Donna Jo Holly of Bentonville, Arkansas. After working as an aeronautical design engineer for Douglas Aircraft Company, Jack brought Donna and their family to New Mexico to make a new life, one dedicated to art. That dream became reality. In time, Jack became an award-winning Western artist, working in both bronze and oils. He and Donna maintained the Western Art Gallery in Taos for almost 30 years showing his paintings and sculptures. Jack's subjects were the essence of western life. His childhood was steeped in New Mexico history and the lore of the old West. His surroundings were those of traditional ranching and by his mid-teens he was well-versed in the cattle business. His return to New Mexico was also a return to this life. His art reflected his deep knowledge of regional history and his artist's eye of the hard work of ranching and the beauty of the West. Some of his work reflected the fundamental labor of ranching, while other pieces showed humorous moments of real life, still others, the timeless beauty of a sunrise. His work told stories of the West, past and present. His work reflected what he cherished in his life. Those around him were lucky to share this with him, both in his art and in the way he lived.
