Note: American Impressionist painter Mabel May Woodward was born in Providence, Rhode Island. She received her early art training at the Rhode Island School of Design and continued her studies at the Art Students League of New York with William Merritt Chase, George Bridgman, Arthur Wesley Dow and Kenyon Cox. She attended Charles Herbert Woodburys Ogunquit Summer School of Drawing and Painting in Maine and later worked with Frank DuMond in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Woodward won a gold medal at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1908 and was widely exhibited nationally. She also was a faculty member of the Rhode Island School of Design for twenty-five years, where she developed the Action Class, a pioneering concept to study the human figure as a machine rather than a stationary object. An oil painting on cardboard by Mabel May Woodward, titled Provincetown Birds Eye View. A fine Impressionist painting depicts a provincial town with white houses, surrounded by greenery and white sailing boats in the distance. On the back of the painting, there is a label with the name of the artist and the title of the artwork. Housed in a relief gilt wooden frame. Mabel May Woodward, 1877 to 1945, American, was a prominent Rhode Island impressionist painter during the late 19th and early 20th century. The artist was a faculty at the Rhode Island School of Design for over twenty years. There, she originated a class known as the Action Class, in which students studied the human figure as a machine rather than as a stationary object. Also, she was a longtime member and the first woman president of the Providence Art Club. Later, she became known for her summer beach scenes along the New England shore. She painted many beach scenes and airy landscapes focusing on the play of light and shadow. Woodward preferred colorful canvases and used bold, unlabored brushstrokes heavy with impasto. She was also known for genre, European scenes, villages, farms, still lifes and flowers. Providence, Rhode Island, her hometown, was a mecca for artists at the time she was growing up, and the many noted artists painting there at the time no doubt influenced her work as much as the pleasant scenery she was accustomed to. Although she traveled and painted in Europe, she remained a daughter of Maine her entire life spending most of her summers in Ogunquit, a major center of art. Woodward was a long-time faculty member at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she pioneered the "The Action Class" a study of the human figure as a machine rather than a stationery object. She was also a member of the Providence Art Club, where she had a highly-praised "one-woman" show; a member of the Providence Watercolor Club; South County Art Association; Ogunquit Art Association and others. She died August 14th, 1945.
