Woodward was born in Seekonk, Massachusetts and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Massachusetts Normal Art School in Boston, and the Academie Julian with Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre. He and his brother, Ellsworth, were highly influential figures in New Orleans in the 19th century. William's interest in art was stirred by the Philadelphia Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876. He moved to New Orleans in 1876 and taught at Tulane University and Newcomb College until his retirement in 1922.

Notes: In 1886, the Camors sisters, Bertha and Emma, opened "The Shop of the Two Sisters" on the first floor off the courtyard of their in-law's residence on Royal Street. The sisters' shop specialized in ball gowns and assorted finery, including lace and perfumes imported from France, and occasionally invited guests for tea and cakes in the large courtyard. The popular shop remained open for twenty years and the courtyard became known as the "Court of Two Sisters". As an artist and ardent historic preservationist, William Woodward documented the historic buildings in the French Quarter, many of which had become derelict and run down. He often used Raffaelli oil crayons on board for his French Quarter views, preferring the convenience and desired textural effect for the architecture. William Woodward's "Courtyard on Rue Royale in 1904" provided both an accurate historical depiction of the courtyard and a visual record of the cultural life in the French Quarter. He revisited this courtyard scene several times over the course of his career. The first version of 1904, now in the New Orleans Museum of Art, depicts an empty courtyard. For this painting, the second version, Woodward added the Camors sisters in the courtyard outside of their shop and an African American woman on the second-floor balcony, shaking a rug over the railing; bringing an enduring representation of daily life in the French Quarter at the turn of the century. After retiring from Tulane University's Architecture School and confined to a wheelchair after surgery, Woodward settled with his wife, Louise, into a studio/home in Biloxi, Mississippi. In 1938, he published the book French Quarter Etchings to continue his efforts of bringing awareness to the preservation of the historic area. These prints were based on his earlier Raffaelli oil crayon French Quarter paintings. He created an etching for the book of "Courtyard on Rue Royal in 1904" based on this painting and included the Camors sisters. In 1963, Joe Fein, Jr. opened the Court of Two Sisters restaurant. The legacy of the Camors sisters' serving a repast on the courtyard was continued. The Fein family continues to pay homage to the Camors sisters by restoring and maintaining their graves. According to local lore, the ghosts of the sisters occasionally make appearances in the dining room and kitchen of the restaurant.

Note: In 1892, William Woodward and a group of fellow Louisiana residents formed the Worlds Columbian Association of Louisiana for the express purpose of representing the state at the Worlds Columbian Exposition or Worlds Fair in Chicago the following year. The group planned a building in the form of a Louisiana Colonial plantation house and filled it with products and artwork from around the state. Of particular note, Woodward included a large oil painting of himself and George Ohr throwing pots in New Orleans. In the work offered here, Woodward depicts the California State Building, the second largest state building after Illinois, presumably on the opening day of the fair. The buildings Mission Revival Style with its red tile roof and domed bell towers reflects the Franciscan Missions of its home state. With the building festooned in American flag bunting, crowds of people gather in the lawn, and Woodward expertly captures the excitement and frenzy of the masses with his fast, rhythmic brushstrokes.

Note: Through his paintings of New Orleans, William Woodward was intent on capturing the French Quarter in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, both its architecture and the vanishing customs of the Creole people who inhabited it. Woodward depicted street scenes with iconic structures such as "Madame John's Legacy" offered here, as well as private homes and commercial buildings. His intent to preserve a moment in time of a city that was constantly changing yielded important works of art that capture much more than a period photograph by incorporating Woodward's skillful handling of the vibrant medium with his sense of romance for New Orleans. This series of works, while not primarily an architectural record, laid the foundation for the local preservationist movement soon to follow in the French Quarter. One of the few surviving 18th century building complexes in Louisiana and one of the best examples of French colonial architecture in North America, the original structure of Madame John's Legacy managed to survive the 1794 fire in the French Quarter unscathed. There is some debate regarding the loss sustained in the prior 1788 fire. The owner, Manuel de Lanzos, instructed his American contractor, Robert Jones, to recycle as much brick and iron hardware as possible from his damaged house, suggesting that enough of it survived the fire to be included in the rebuilding. Whether entirely rebuilt in 1788 or a restoration of a previous structure, the house retained the French colonial style that prevailed before the disaster and is now designated an official National Historic Landmark. The houses name was inspired by George Washington Cables 1874 short story Tite Poulette, in which the character Monsieur John bequeaths a Dumaine Street house to his mistress, known as Madame John. Though older parts of the French Quarter were once dotted with similar structures, today very few houses like Madame Johns Legacy remain. Woodward, who often created several slightly varying works portraying the same scene, included a 1902 etching of Madame John's Legacy in his book, French Quarter Etchings of Old New Orleans, published in 1938. The permanent collection of the Louisiana State Museum holds a larger painting of Madame John's Legacy by Woodward, while one other depiction is known to be held in a private collection. Interestingly in the view offered here, Woodward forgoes the inclusion of the horse-drawn cart seen in the other views in favor of a vendor depicted in the open doorway of the lower level with additional varied figures along the walkway. This choice allowed the architecture of the famous building to take center stage in the more closely centered and carefully constructed composition. Ref.: Bragg, Jean and Susan Saward. Notes: The courtyard of the Historic New Orleans Collection, then the Arts and Crafts Club of New Orleans, is one of the most iconic courtyards in the French Quarter, captured by one of the most important artists, educators, and supporters of Southern Art- William Woodward. Woodward and his brother Ellsworth were formative; they founded and organized numerous schools, buildings and associations, including Newcomb College, the Tulane University campus, the Tulane School of Architecture, the Art Association of New Orleans and Vieux Carré Commission. The Woodwards equally championed the Arts and Crafts Club, an embodiment of their legacy that jointly fostered art education and historic preservation. Officially established in June 1922 after the wealthy financier W.R. Irby gifted the Seignouret-Brulatour building at 520 Royal Street to the Club for use as a gallery, club and school, the Club became a beacon for modern art in the South. It offered classes to the public, held meetings/lectures, exhibitions, and balls- the flourishing art center engendered the architectural revival of the French Quarter, which otherwise would have been lost to urban decay in the early 20th century. The Club's illustrious faculty, who included Kinsey, Spratling, Millet, Heldner, Alferez, Stevens and Durieux, fostered another prolific generation of Southern artists, namely Crawford, McCrady and Boyd Cruise- the first director of the Historic New Orleans Collection, whose work was commissioned by the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) in the 1930s to document the architectural heritage of the French Quarter. In a 1924 letter to the editor of the American Magazine of Art, Woodward lauded the Club for having accomplished a "Renaissance of French Town" through its charter and described the prominent court, he so adeptly captures here, as being centrally located in one of the "best old courtyard buildings where they have a lofty and spacious gallery on level with the court and a stage at one end". This view of the famous court not only commemorates the Club's inception, but it is also one of the last architectural paintings Woodward executed in the French Quarter. In 1923 he moved to Biloxi following his untimely fall from a scaffold that left him paralyzed. Some of his last paintings of New Orleans, which likely included this work, were exhibited in a Christmas party retirement homage at Newcomb College that ran for three weeks concurrent with its alumnae sale.
