        Hal Woolf (1902-1962) Scene from Harlequinade 1920 Oil on canvas Signed & dated lower right 74 x 100 cm, 94 x 112 cm framed LITERATURE: Hal Woolf was a painter in oil and watercolour often of town scenes. He studied art at Chelsea Polytechnic under Bernard Adams 1920-22 and later in Paris at La Grande Chaumiere. He exhibited with the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, the London Group, and with the National Society of Painters and Gravers to which body he was elected a member in 1946. He lived in London for many years and died in mysterious circumstances 24 hours after being hit by a car in Park Lane. He exhibited at Redfern Gallery, London in 1929 OTHER NOTES: Losses to top right quadrant, requires cleaning, original framing

(1902-1962) FIESTA (1936) signed lower left oil on card 35.0 x 46.0 cm / 13 3/4 x 18 in Provenance: Major Norman Kark Hal Woolf studied at the Chelsea Polytechnic under Bernard Adams between 1920-1922 and later in Paris, at La Grand Chaumiere. His death in mysterious circumstances caught the imagination of the public and provoked a parliamentary investigation into the Metropolitan Police, who were blamed for it. Major Norman Kark was a South-African publishing magnate, who served in the Canada Corps in WWII. He was the father of Austen Kark, C.B.E., the Managing Director of the BBC.

        Hal Woolf NS, British 1902-1962- Pimlico; watercolour and pencil, signed and dated '36, 26.3x36.3cm (ARR) Exhibited: The Woodstock Gallery, London, loaned by Finbar Gibbings Esq., according to the former frame label attached to the reverse of the mount Note: Woolf extensively exhibited at the Redfern Gallery, as well as the RA, ROI and LG. During World War II where he served as a captain in the Royal Engineers, he was known to have begun using marijuana. Woolf's death in 1962 is surrounded in mystery after going missing, being knocked down by a car, being taken into police custody for possession of a 'dangerous drug', and returning to hospital in a comatosed state.
