[The Miniature Print Society member, Formerly estate of Louis Holman] Thomas Worlidge Pair of Miniature Engravings. They measure 7 cm x 6 cm plate size. Louis A. Holman (Massachusetts, 1866-1939) Illustrator, art editor, and print dealer; Boston, Mass. Holman was born on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and began work in the bookselling and publishing business in Canada. He moved to Boston in 1889, where he attended Cowles Art School and studied with the painter Charles Woodbury. Holman travelled extensively and contributed illustrations and articles to various popular magazines and worked as art editor of New England Magazine and the Youth's Companion. In 1915, he established a print department at Goodspeed's Book Shop, leaving in 1930 to open his own firm, Holman's Print Shop, where he was joined by his son, Richard Bourne Holman, who ran the firm after Louis' death in 1939 until 1977. Provenance: Estate collection of William Greenbaum, Gloucester, Massachusetts, Proprietor of William Greenbaum Fine Prints. If lot is absent of a condition report one may be requested via email. Brustbildnis der Arabella Worlidge, der Frau des Künstlers, mit Pinsel und Palette. Radierung und Kaltnadel, mit Pinsel in Schwarz und Grau überarbeitet. 15,2 x 11,8 cm. Verso in Feder bezeichnet: "Portrait of Mrs. Worlidge of Bath by her Husband Tho.s". Der Maler und Radierer Thomas Worlidge erhielt seine erste künstlerische Ausbildung bei dem Genueser Meister Alessandro Maria Grimaldi (1659-1732), der in London lebte und arbeitete und dessen Tochter Arabella von Worlidge geehelicht wurde. Nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt in Birmingham, wo er als Glasmaler tätig war, kehrte Worlidge Mitte der 1730er Jahre nach London zurück, um bei dem Kupferstecher Louis Pierre Boitard in die Lehre zu gehen. Während einer Reise nach Flandern und Holland in der Begleitung von Boitard machte der Künstler Bekanntschaft mit dem Werk Rembrandts, der nunmehr seine bedeutendste künstlerische Inspirationsquelle sein sollte. Worlidge suchte den Stil Rembrandts täuschend nachzuahmen, so daß manche seiner Gemälde von den Zeitgenossen sogar für eigenhändige Werke des niederländischen Meisters gehalten wurden. Ab 1740 war der Künstler vornehmlich in Bath ansässig, wo er sich mit gemalten und gezeichneten Miniaturbildnissen einen Namen machte. Worlidge radierte zahlreiche Blätter in Rembrandts Manier und hat wesentlich zum Revival dieses Künstlers im England des 18. Jahrhunderts beigetragen. Das vorliegende, unvollendete Bildnis der Arabella Worlidge fehlt in Naglers Aufstellung der Radierungen. Möglicherweise entstand es als Pendant zu dem rembrandtesken Selbstbildnis des Künstlers aus dem Jahre 1754, das den Künstler im Pelzmantel und mit Barett bei der Arbeit zeigt. Auf unserem Bildnis ist nur das Antlitz der Gattin des Künstlers genauer ausgearbeitet und durch einfache Kreuzschraffuren und Parallellagen plastisch modelliert, während der Oberkörper und die Hände nur umrisshaft wiedergegeben sind. Einzelne Kreuzlagen im Gesicht sind mit Bleistift angedeutet, die Frisur, die Kopfbedeckung der Künstlerin und einzelne Partien der Kleidung und des Hintergrundes sind mit flotten Tuschpinselstrichen überarbeitet. Das anmutige Blättchen besitzt den Reiz des Unvollendeten und atmet die Spontaneität eines primo pensiero.
