    PHILIPS WOUWERMAN (cerchia di)

    Est: €500 - €800

    Nov. 16, 2024

Philips Wouwerman, Stable Interior with Horsemen and Horses

    Est: €15,000 - €20,000

Monogrammed lower left: PHiLSW (conjoined) The present canvas, once housed in the important collection of C. J. K. van Aalst, belongs to a group of stable paintings by Philips Wouwermans (cf. ill. 1; Schumacher, op. cit., pp. 198-208). The scene depicted in these works is always a large stable painted in subtle shades of brown, with a high entrance, in this case on the left, affording a view of a landscape and blue sky in the background. Horses of differing breeds, elegant riders and grooms are arranged in a frieze-like manner across the picture plane. As is to be expected with Wouwerman, a white horse, here particularly emphasised by the red under the saddle, forms the centre of the composition.

  • Philips Wouwerman, Departing for a Falcon Hunt
    Nov. 16, 2024

Philips Wouwerman, Departing for a Falcon Hunt

    Est: €18,000 - €20,000

Among the most popular subjects of the Haarlem painter Philips Wouwerman, who was already highly successful during his lifetime, are elegant hunting parties. These paintings usually do not show scenes of the hunt itself, but rather the preparation for or the return from a hunt. In the present, brilliantly executed small painting, it is the departure for a falcon hunt that Wouwerman presents in a close cropped view. His "trademark" white horse stands prominently in the foreground, an elegant lady with a falcon on her arm and a gentleman in a dark coat are already seated on horseback, while a third participant is waiting for a servant to saddle his horse. Dr Birgit Schumacher has confirmed this painting to be the artist's own work and dated the painting to the early 1660s.

  • Philips Wouwerman, A Village Market
    Nov. 16, 2024

    Philips Wouwerman, A Village Market

    Est: €50,000 - €60,000

This village market scene by Philips Wouwerman is unique due to the one element that has been omitted from the work. The scenery is diverse and varied: traders have set up their stalls between permanent buildings, offering a variety of goods ranging from vegetables to poultry; between them we see people shopping alongside children and dogs; a church steeple towers in the landscape of the background. But one thing is missing. This is one of the few compositions by Wouwerman that does not include a horse. The artist was popularly known as a specialist in these animals. His reputation was such that even a hundred years later, the Frankfurt horse painter J.G. Pforr was still referred to appreciatively as "the German Wouwerman". Perhaps this particular acclaim overshadowed the equally outstanding skills that distinguished Philips Wouwerman of Haarlem as a genre and landscape painter. He sets this depiction of a village market into a peaceful setting, which is also unusual for an œuvre otherwise characterised by scenes of soldiers. Here the painter has instead focused his attention on the figures who bring the market scene to life. But Wouwerman apparently took just as much pleasure in the precise observation of the vegetables on offer, which he presents in the marketplace in the manner of a still life.

    Philipps Wouwerman

    Est: €3,600 - €7,200

L. u. monogr.; 33,5 cm x 40 cm. Barock-Rahmen. Provenienz: Auktion Schloss Ahlden, 27.11.1999, Lot 1346. Circle of Philips Wouwerman (1619 - 1668). Oil on oak panel. Monogrammed.
