Joseph (1734) Wright Sold at Auction Prices

Porträtmaler, b. 1734 - d. 1797

(b Derby, 3 Sept 1734; d Derby, 29 Aug 1797). English painter. He painted portraits, landscapes and subjects from literature, but his most original and enduringly celebrated works are a few which reflect the philosophical and technological preoccupations of the later 18th century and are characterized by striking effects of artificial light. He was the first major English painter to work outside the capital all his life: apart from spells in Liverpool (1768–71), Italy (1773–5) and Bath (1775–7), he lived and worked in his native Derby, though exhibiting in London at both the Society of Artists (1765–76, 1791) and the Royal Academy (1778–82, 1789–90, 1794). Reappraisal of his achievements has followed Nicolson’s monograph of 1968.

          Est: £7,000 - £10,000

Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797). Portrait of John Harrison, surgeon of Derby, c. 1781 * Wright of Derby (Joseph, 1734-1797). Portrait of John Harrison, surgeon of Derby, circa 1781, oil on canvas, half-length in three-quarter profile to left, wearing a plain dark vest, coat, and white cravat, 74 x 61 cm (29 x 24 ins), gilt moulded frame QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: Nathaniel Curzon, Esq., 1870; thence by descent to John Curzon of Lockington Hall, Derby (Derby Art Gallery labels for Joseph Wright of Derby exhibition loans for 1934 & 1947 to verso); acquired by the current owner's family at Christie's, King Street, London, 21 March 1975, lot 81. Literature: Benedict Nicolson, Joseph Wright of Derby, 1968, vol. 1, pp. 69-70, 200-201; vol. 2, p. 122, plate 199. 'Not only is the portrait listed in the Account Book among portraits of c. 1781, it also belongs stylistically to this date or slightly earlier. The subject must therefore be wrongly identified as John Harrison, clock-maker and inventor of a marine chronometer who died in March 1776 before Wright got back from Bath. Wright calls him a doctor, so he is probably the "surgeon in Wardwick", Mr. John Harrison, in whose house the daughter of Edward Wilmot of Duffield died (see Derby Mercury, 24th September 1786). He is described in Derby Mercury, 11th October 1781 as having died: "surgeon aged 64..." The portrait could show a man of c. 56.' (Nicolson, ibid., pp. 201-203). John Harrison (circa 1723-1787), surgeon of Derby, was appointed the first surgeon to Derby Gaol, on compulsion by Act of Parliament, in 1774, Timothy Pitman becoming a partner in this role in 1784. A notice in the Derby Mercury (13 December 1771) advertises the resumption of Harrison's inoculation service 'for the Season, to Inoculate as usual, on Mr. Sutton's Plan'. A mezzotint engraving from this portrait was engraved by John Raphael Smith (1751-1812), circa 1781

Original vintage travel poster - National Parks Our Heritage - Dovedale, seen here in an eighteenth-century water-colour by Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797), is the best known of the limestone dales which grace the southern part of the Peak District National Park. Fox Literature:Benedict Nicolson, Joseph Wright of Derby : Painter of Light, London, Paul Mellon Foundation for British Art, 1968, nos. 62 and 63In his 1968 Catalogue Raisonné Benedict Nicholson suggests that it is more likely that the sitters represent Mr. and Mrs. William, however this was presumably based principally on the location of the Fox portraits entry in the account book, where it appears directly above entries for various views in the Lake District of the mid-1790s. However, Wright's account book does not follow a strict chronological order and is not a reliable mechanism for dating purposes. In addition, the identities of the sitters are confirmed not only by the old labels attached to the stretchers, but also by their provenance, by direct descent from Francis and Dorothy Fox to the present owner. Both works are to be included in Martin Postle's forthcoming catalogue raisonné.

Circle of Joseph Wright of Derby, ARA, British 1734-1797- Portrait of a lady, half-length, wearing yellow and blue dress with lace trim, turned to the right; oil on canvas, 76.8 x 63.2 cm. Provenance: With Sabin Galleries Ltd, UK, After 1971 (according to a label attached to the reverse of the previous frame). Note: Portrayed in a feigned oval, the elegant portrait of the anonymous sitter here reflects the influence of Wright of Derby who worked in the studio of London painter Thomas Hudson (1701-1779) from 1751-1753. Lit from the left, the artist’s confident treatment of light and shade sensitively models the young lady’s features and is reminiscent of the early handling of Wright’s portraits. The style of the sitter’s elegant dress, with the distinctive ribboned crossing, is echoed in Wright’s ‘Portrait of a lady, traditionally identified as Susannah Fenton’, which sold at Chiswick Auctions, London, 20 March 2019, lot 14. Est: $1,000 - $2,000

attributed to JOSEPH WRIGHT OF DERBY (English 1734-1797) A PAINTING, "Portrait D'Homme, Tricorne Sous Bras," 1750-1770, oil on canvas, stretcher inscribed in pencil, "Samuel Foot 'Comedian'," and "Father of the Countess of Harrington," with paper label remnant from the Lamm Catalogue, stretcher stamped, "W. Morrill Lined," by canvas liner William Morrill (1838-1910), 30" x 25", framed, 37" x 31 1/2". Note: The sitter is attributed to Samuel Foot, a renowned English actor, and comedian of the 18th century. He wears a widow's peak white, short whig and white neck scarf tied with a restrained ruffle, centered by his grey waistcoat and overcoat suit, adorned with matching buttons. He is notably stiff in his overall presentation, though upturned lips combined with rosy cheeks and jolly silvery blue-grey eyes tell the viewer somewhat more than his restrained English grey suit belies. This suit is notably lacking extraneous embroidery or lace embellishment. He holds a pinned tricorn hat under his arm. The present three-quarter length portrait is a remarkable example of mid-eighteenth-century portraiture. Provenance: The Private Houston Collector, purchased from a Private Estate Sale, Denver, Colorado, 1986; The Lamm Collection from Näsby Castle (Near Stockholm, Sweden) sold by The American Art Association, New York, February 21-24, 1923, John Bass, purchased, $125; Christie's' sale, attributed to Zoffany, April 20, 1914; Private Collector, Houston, Texas

          Est: £15,000 - £20,000

JOSEPH WRIGHT OF DERBY (DERBY 1734 - 1797) Portrait of a young lady in a feather hat and a blue dress, bust length oil on canvas 77 x 64 cm (30 1/4 x 25 1/4 in) PROVENANCE: Private Collection, Germany; Sydney Seymour-Lucas, Suffolk, UK Dating from the early 1750s, and newly attributed to Joseph Wright of Derby, the present work is a particularly fine example of the artist’s early portrait style. Portrayed in a feigned oval, the commanding pose and graceful air of the sitter reflects the influence of the London painter Thomas Hudson, in whose studio Wright worked from 1751-153, while the subtle use of light and shade that model the young lady’s features announces the style of Wright’s later works. Lit from the right, Wright defines the format of the composition with the theatrical plumes of the sitter’s hat at the top of the canvas and the tulle-like fabric of her sleeves to left and right to create a triangular focus. Within these confines he decorates the young girl with a string of pearls that fall languorously around her face and neck to her bosom, and the semi-precious stones that descend from her shoulders to provocatively trace the décolletage of her dress. Although the sitter is yet to be identified, the dress, pearls and jewels compare to those worn in the Lady of the Chomley family’s portrait painted by Wright in 1755, suggesting that the clothes may be studio clothing, and the sitter possibly a model, the present work being used by the young Wright to show his abilities and tout for portrait commissions from prospective clients. We are grateful to Brian Allen for confirming the attribution of the present work to Joseph Wright of Derby.

Private Collection Literature: Benedict Nicholson catalogue Raissone of Joseph Wright of Derby pp 68-9, 73 196. Dateable on stylistic ground to c 1778-80. Note: Joseph Wright is one of the most successful artists of the Age of Enlightenment, known primarily for his atmospheric paintings using chiaroscuro in order to emphasise the contrast of light and dark. Born to a prosperous family in Derby on 3rd September 1734, Wright moved to London in 1751 with ambitions of becoming a painter. For two years, he studied under the portrait painter Thomas Hudson, who also counted Joseph van Aken and Joshua Reynolds amongst his students. Wright then returned to Derby, and besides some notable periods away such as Liverpool from 1768 to 1771 and Italy from 1773 to 1775, he always found himself called back to his hometown, where he lived until his death in 1797. Wright made a name for himself through his exceptional skill at painting dramatic light, often linked to his connections to Enlightenment figures such as Josiah Wedgwood and Erasmus Darwin. His work, such as An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump, currently in the National Gallery in London, is an excellent example of his engagement with modern technology and his skill at employing artificial light. Although most well known for using this technique in portraits and paintings of modern life, it is visible in much of his work. While in Derby, Wright painted portraits of numerous prosperous residents, such as the current portrait of the Mayor of Derby Henry Flint in 1787. Similar portraits of mayors are currently held in the Derby Museums collection, for example his 1789 portrait of Isaac Borrow who was twice the Mayor of the city. The enduring appeal of works by Joseph Wright of Derby is visible in the fact that they are held in numerous important private collections and public institutions worldwide such as the National Gallery in London, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, and the Museum of Fine Art in Boston.
