NEWELL CONVERS WYETH (1882-1945) PITTSBURGH IN THE BEGINNING / PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD. 1930. 41x27¾ inches, 101x70½ cm. The Pennsylvania Railroad Company. Condition B+: expert overpainting in margins and around text; minor restoration along creases in image. In the late 1920s, N.C. Wyeth was commissioned to produce twelve paintings for the Pennsylvania Railroad featuring patriotic themes. Only four were ultimately painted before the economic situation in America forced the railroad to cancel the rest of the project. The completed paintings were used for posters, and subsequently, in 1932, as calendar backs. A student of Howard Pyle, Wyeth was a prolific illustrator whose work appeared in magazines and children's books. Here, in keeping with his style as a children's book illustrator, this image romanticizes the establishment of Fort Prince George, at the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers, between colonists and Native Americans. We can date the poster via its entry in the Library of Congress catalogue of copyright entries from 1930. Pennsylvania Railroad Patriotic Posters, No. 3, Not in Zega.

In the late 1920s, N.C. Wyeth was commissioned to produce twelve paintings for the Pennsylvania Railroad featuring patriotic themes. Only four were ultimately painted before the economic situation in America forced the railroad to cancel the rest of the project. The completed paintings were used for posters, and subsequently, in 1932, as calendar backs. A student of Howard Pyle, Wyeth was a prolific illustrator whose work appeared in magazines and children's books. Here, in keeping with his style as a children's book illustrator, this image romanticizes the quintessential American patriotic scene - Philadelphia in 1776 and the one-time ringing of the Liberty Bell. Biography from the Archives of askART: The following is from The New York Times online edition, 1/25/2001: N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945), America's greatest illustrator as well as an accomplished easel painter, dedicated his career to depicting American subjects in a fresh, energetic manner uninfluenced by European art - "true, solid American subjects - nothing foreign about them," as he put it in 1903. Reflecting times in which unconditional loyalty to country was taken for granted and the American flag was a sacred symbol of freedom, N.C. executed works that encapsulated those very American qualities. As television anchorman Tom Brokaw points out in his catalogue essay, the patriarch of the Wyeth clan "was a man of the first half of the century, roughly from Theodore Roosevelt to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, when Americans seemed to be framed in red, white and blue bunting and the background music was "Yankee Doodle Dandy" or Kate Smith singing "God Bless America". N.C.'s lifelong veneration for America's historical traditions, growing out of his New England heritage and strengthened by his Chadds Ford residency in the history-rich Brandywine Valley, manifested itself in idealized, heroic images of such larger-than-life personalities as Paul Revere, George Washington, Nathan Hale, Thomas Jefferson, John Paul Jones and Abraham Lincoln. He painted stalwart views of Stonewall Jackson and Ulysses S. Grant and action-packed renditions of Civil War combat, suggesting valor and patriotism on both sides. Commissioned by the government during World War I to create recruiting and propaganda posters, Wyeth had an output that ranged from images of brave doughboys helping their wounded mates, in "WWI Poster" (1918), to dramatic paintings of terrified Huns surrendering to gun-toting American infantrymen in Kamerad! (1919). Along with other Americans, N.C. was horrified by stories of atrocities committed by the German Army. He responded with vivid, impassioned images, such as "The Abdication of Attila" (1917), done for Life magazine, that suggested that Kaiser Wilhelm had outstripped the infamous Attila the Hun as the epitome of "supreme evil" and the "arch-tyrant" of history. Pondering an offer from the War Department to become an official artist at the Western Front, Wyeth remarked, "I wouldn't mind a crack at a Boche or two, and would be tickled to death if I could disembowel their divine leader...." Responding with equal patriotic fervor to the challenge of World War II, Wyeth underscored the determination of Uncle Sam and our citizen army in Amateurs at War: The American Soldier in Action (1943) and the heroism of GIs in the Pacific in Marines Landing on the Beach (1944). He recognized the contributions of farmers to the Allied effort in Soldiers of the Soil (1942), an illustration for a Brown and Bigelow calendar, and in another calendar work, Our Emblem (1944), reflected the symbolism of the American eagle protecting a tranquil New England hamlet. Wyeth's colorful Buy War Bonds (1942), featuring an assertive Uncle Sam clutching Old Glory and urging on planes overhead and infantrymen on the ground, helped the Treasury Department sell a lot of bonds to back the war effort. One poster sold $200,000 worth of bonds, while another took in $1 million, according to Wyeth biographer David Michaelis. In a tempera-on-panel, The War Letter (1941) he depicted his parents on the bucolic grounds of their home in Needham, Mass. As his mother reads a letter from the morning mail and a newspaper describing overseas developments lies next to her, his father looks on. It is a poignant vignette reflecting keen home front concern about unfolding wartime events. To N.C. Wyeth, the choice between good and evil, freedom and tyranny in both World Wars was clear. His characteristically bold, forceful images, imbued with old-fashioned patriotism, helped spur an embattled America on to victory in both conflicts.

Torn between his commission work—for the likes of Scribner’s, Harper’s Monthly, and The Saturday Evening Post—and his desire to be a fine artist, Wyeth longed to create paintings “with a soul.” The rolling hills and Sycamore-studded environs of the Brandywine River Valley, where he settled with his wife in 1908, had a profound effect on him, as did coastal Maine. For Wyeth, these were places of consequence. Free from the limitations imposed by commercial projects, he was welcome to experiment, to audition different styles, and to produce a deeply personal body of work. Arguably the most resonant of his landscapes were of the area around Port Clyde, Maine, where the Wyeth family summered from 1920 onward. "Eight Bells," their low-slung sea captain's cottage at the tip of the St. George Peninsula, offered unobstructed views of the harbor–and of the adjacent Hupper property, as depicted in the present painting. At more than 48 x 40 inches, Jetty Tree exudes the freedom that Wyeth experienced in Maine. Executed in an unrestrained, impressionist style, and in a cool palette indicative of its coastal setting, the painting is relieved of the limitations imposed by plot and process. Rather, a stout apple tree and jetty take center stage; at right, a lobsterman hunches to inspect the day's catch. In the distance, through a late-afternoon haze, are the sylvan islands of Maine's Midcoast. Fresh-to-market after a long-term loan to the Brandywine Museum of Art, Jetty Tree has been featured in two important exhibitions–one devoted to Wyeth's landscapes and another that juxtaposed Wyeth's output with that of his grandson, Jamie. For the pair, even across generations, nature remained a creative nexus. Andrew Wyeth, the most prolific of the family's landscapists, dated the present work to 1936–the same year his father executed Bright and Fair (Eight Bells), one of his most significant Maine scenes. Satisfying a desire to create personally meaningful, soulful compositions, while offering a counterpoint to his commercial ventures, works like Jetty Tree occupy an important position within the elder Wyeth's oeuvre.
