    FRANK A. WYLEY (1905 - 1978) Two linoleum cuts. Mother and Child, 1942. 203x152 mm; 8x6 inches, full margins. Signed, titled, dated "2/24/42" and numbered 1 in pencil, lower margin. * Morning Rounds, 1942. 152x200 mm; 6x7 7/8 inches, full margins. Signed, titled, dated "6/4/42" and numbered 2 in pencil, lower margin. Very good, dark impressions. These two scarce prints are the first works by the artist to appear at auction. Frank Wyley, a self-taught artist from New Orleans, drew inspiration from French artists, including Henri Matisse, Paul Cézanne and Georges Rouault. While working during the day as a porter, he was commissioned to paint several works as part of the WPA's Federal Arts Project, before later exhibitions in New York and Atlanta. Two of Wyley's oil paintings are included in the collection of the Amistad Research Center, New Orleans.
