        MENGZI (372-289 bce) 經部/四書類; 孟子七卷 (宋)朱熹集註; 清刻本,四冊 18x11.5cm; 1960年以 $5.50購入(王濟遠,見第1條)。 MENCIUS Woodblock print: 7 x 4 5/8 in. (18 x 11.5 cm) 4 books; with notes by Zhu Xi (1130-1200); Provenance: Asian book collection of over one hundred lots from the personal library of Wang Jiyuan (1893-1975) including many from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Together with 10 pieces of calligraphy dedicated to him by Yun Yufren, Wang Fang Yu, Tan Yan Kai, and Liu Jiang Duan. Wang Jiyuan was an established watercolorist and oil painter by 1919, and founded the renowned Tien Ma Society in Shanghai with Liu Haisu to promote Western Style. In the 1920s he lived in Europe and in the early 1940s he moved to the United States and established the School of Chinese Brushwork in New York. Wang Jiyuan was a colleague of many well-known Chinese artists, including Chang Dai-Chien, Wang Yachen, and Pan Yuliang.         Asia/Chinese Printed Books. 10-volume work related to Zhu Xi (Chu Hsi, a.k.a. Wen Gong), Confucian philosopher (ca. 1130-1200). Nearly every leaf of the main portion of the text has an original illustration, usually a watercolor, and printed text in its lower portion. Approx. 30-40 leaves per volume, some variation. Vol 10 is substantially shorter. 10 3/8" x 6 3/4" (26.2 x 16.7 cm). Arranged and bound in the Chinese manner. Wraps worn with some losses (including complete loss of 1 wrap, the loss of the outer portion of some volumes' front wrap, and the separation of several other wraps). Most leaves at least partially opened at their outer edge. Some leaves chipped (mostly in margins), corners rounded. Some dampstaining. Text/illustrations very good. In blue clamshell case, with printed label; clamshell case worn/fragmentary. Collection of Arthur W. Hummel Sr. & Arthur W. Hummel Jr. Mr. Hummel Sr. was the first chief of the Library of Congress Orientalia Division. Mr. Hummel Jr. was the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs and U.S. Ambassador to China.
