        Rare and important Japanese landscape oil painting by Susumu Yamaguchi (1897-1983). Oil on canvas. Signed. Measuring 18 by 21 inches. Shipping to Japan is estimated for $125-$175 depending on location. n 1920 Susumu Yamaguchi moved to Tokyo. There is studied with Kuroda Seiki at the Aoibashi Western Painting institute and he exhibited with Nihon Hanga Kyokai and contributed to hanga magazines. 1945 the the war forced him to return to his birthplace, the Nagano prefecture, where he began exhibiting prints. His paintings and prints of the mountains were very popular with foreigners. The subject of this painting is the Azusa river and Hokata mountain, Kamikochi Nagano Japan. Yamaguchi’s paintings often display elements of his prints For example, dramatic landscapes, rendered in a strong, simplified manner. He continued to produce prints as well as oil paintings and in 1927 had his first exhibition abroad in Los Angeles. This painting, an example of his early work was likely shown at this exhibition. The title is written on Japanese characters on verso.Please see all images for condition. Size is measured and written on the back of the painting.
