Yeoh Jin Leng (b. 1929) Trapped Series, 1997

        Est: RM5,000 - RM9,000

Trapped Series is a classical drawing of human forms situated within an enclosed three-dimensional space. The subtle modulation of human figures in movement with smooth curves highlight the arms and torso. Spatial depth is suggested with subtle shadows, expressing the play of light effects within the image. Yeoh Jin Leng attended the Malaysian Teachers' College, Kirkby, Liverpool in 1952 and was enrolled to the Chelsea School of Art from 1957 to 1961 as the First Malaysian Federal Scholar for Art. Upon graduation, he attended the London Ministry of Education at London University until 1963. Yeoh Jin Leng (b. 1929) Blue Sky Landscape, 1995

        Est: RM25,000 - RM40,000

Born in Ipoh, Yeoh Jin Leng studied at the Chelsea School of Art, London (1957-1961), and later at the Institute of Education, London University, in 1962. Upon completing his studies abroad, Jin Leng revisited and reinterpreted the Malaysian landscape, based on his development in drawing, and knowledge of history and culture acquired while in London. Nature has provided Jin Leng with boundless inspiration, and he is known primarily for his evocative landscape paintings, composed of impressions of the land, sky and sea. Influenced by Ivon Hitchens and Patric Heron, Jin leng enhanced the luminous properties of the medium of oil and used various brushworks to create movement and sensation of the land. In Blue Sky Landscape, Jin Leng expresses his deep affinity for nature: creating broad shapes, simplifying forms to give them a universal quality. The artist reduced elements of landscape to coloured planes, informed by his understanding of the use of line and its artistic potential. Jin Leng's strong interest in color is evident in this work, overlapping rhythmic colours of blue, green and yellow, and succeeds in conveying a tranquil landscape composition that captured the effects of light and atmosphere. Yeoh Jin Leng is one of the few Malaysian artists left trained in the rigours of the classical British tradition, Chelsea no less from 1957 to 1961. He was also educated at the Malaysian Teachers College in Kirby, Liverpool, in 1952, and the London Ministry of Education, London University. Apart from the MIA, he had also lectured on Art Education at the Specialist Teachers Training Institute, Kuala Lumpur (1963-1968). He was in the pioneer abstract group called GRUP, after his first solo at the British Council, Kuala Lumpur, in 1965. He took part in the Sao Paulo Biennale in Brazil in 1969, and was in the Malaysian art travelling exhibition to Hamburg, Rome, St Etienne and Paris in 1967. He was honoured by the National Art Gallery with a Retrospective of his paintings, ceramics and installations in 1996. He held a mini Post-Retros Ten Years On in Kuala Lumpur of his 1997-2007 works. He was a two-term member of the Board of Trustees of the National Art Gallery in 1989-1991 and 1992-1997, president of the Society for Art Education from 1974-1983, and founder-member and vice-president of the Malaysian Artists Society 1982-1984.

        Yeoh Jin Leng (b. Perak, 1929) Landscape 9, 1995

        Est: RM10,000 - RM20,000

When Yeoh Jin Leng returned home from United Kingdom for the second time in the 1960s, he recalled his experience traveling in a taxi from the airport in Kuala Lumpur to his hometown in Ipoh observing the tropical landscape with the same immense joy as he had recounted in 1955 though this time, his perception towards nature had been rejuvenated and he felt the urge to create a fresh pictorial language. An excerpt from his thoughts is read: “...What struck me was the intensity of the green and gold and the pink. I started to rethink how I should paint what was in my environment. The varied shapes, forms and colours that I had learnt about in London had to be revised, perhaps reduced.” This contemplation resulted in the creation of a pivotal piece titled Ricefields in 1963. Three decades later, his reduction method reached its pinnacle with gestural brush marks in minimal palette applied across the picture plane to illustrate his thoughts and expressions on Gunung Tahan. Yeoh Jin Leng attended the Malaysian Teachers' College, Kirkby, Liverpool in 1952 and was enrolled at the Chelsea School of Art from 1957 to 1961 as the First Malaysian Federal Scholar for Art. YEOH JIN LENG : Human Rot, 1969

        Est: RM120,000 - RM220,000

The Human Rot is certainly one of the most interesting paintings that have ever been made by Yeoh Jin Leng. It was during his visit to London in 1965 when, while walking around Charing Cross, he stumbled upon a book about the devaluation of ethics and morality. The book piqued his fascination with the concept and, inspired by what he read, he went on to paint The Human Rot. It was completed in 1968. A year later, in 1969, the 13th May incident occurred. “I was surprised that it happened. This region has been contaminated by Western capitalism and materialism, and we adopted capitalism because we thought it would bring progress. Instead, it brought about materialism. The social-political upheaval and a greed for power and money were the catalysts that started the riots. The value of ethics has become rotten in many sense of the word,” Jin Leng said.

Rain can be a blessing and a bane. It is succour during drought, but an overwhelming downpour can lead to floods and landslide and erosion. Be it a layman, a fisherman or a farmer, he is affected one way or another. To an artist, the changing weather patterns as ominously heralded in the sky give an opportunity to capture the colours, mood and atmosphere. Yes, a storm can be beautiful: destruction begets hope of renewal, like a metaphor of life. Tropical landscapes are one of the fascination of veteran academician-artist-potter Yeoh Jin Leng. Yeoh Jin Leng had his art tutelage at the Chelsea School of Art (1957-1961) besides the Malayan Teachers College (Kirby, Liverpool, 1952) and the London Ministry of Education (London University, 1963). On his return, he taught at the Specialists Teachers Training Institute from 1963-1968, and was its head of department from 1969-1983, before joining the Malaysian Institute of Art as dean of studies from 1984-1994. He was given a retrospective, Jin Leng: Art And Thoughts 1952-1995, by the National Art Gallery Malaysia in 1996, and a mini post-retrospective called Ten Years On at the NN Gallery, KL, in 2007, as well as Life-Drawings From Chelsea Days (1958-1962) at NN Gallery in 2008. He was one of the seven major artists featured in the landmark GRUP exhibition in 1967. He won the 1990 Australian Culture Award and the Perak State Award in 1998. His early promise was in 1969 when he won the Special Prize (Painting) in the Salon Malaysia and the Tokyo Biennale Prize for Painting, and in the 1992 Salon Malaysia, he won the Minor Award for Sculpture. He was also a guest Artist to West Germany (1970), USA (1970), France (1990), again in the USA in 1985, as a guest art educationist.

YEOH JIN LENG (b. 1929) MELAWATI SERIES, 1982, Acrylic on canvas

        Est: RM30,000 - RM55,000

The mood evoked is one of a pre-dawn haziness as the sun rays surreptitiously filter through, but it’s essentially a landscape that is dreamy in its soft applications, minimal, with cool muted colours and sense of spaciousness without demarcations of blocks of vegetative variants. The lyrical gestural play resonates of the Colour Field with the contemplative hold of Mark Rothko, but much more genteel. Yeoh Jin Leng, a pioneer abstractionist of the Malaysian landscapes starting with his iconic 1960s Sawah Padi, has again pushed the métiers of such representation to a new level, as he had when revisiting padi-fields with a new time-code during the mid-1990s. The Melawati Series is not tied to the time per se of its creation, but one that was inspired by the memories of the place during the 1960s, but which is a marker of sorts as the Melawati green lung and frontier land was then, on the cusp of massive development coming its way. Home of the 110-acre Zoo Negara site, the Bukit Tabur hiking trail and Taman Rimba Ampang, it has become a thriving self-contained more affluent township Postcode 53100 in the decades that followed, and accessible by many highway links such as MRR2, Duke and Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway (Akleh). The time of his painting was also propitious, for he was to start working at the new Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) campus there, as Dean of Studies and also head of the newly created Ceramics Department (1983-1993), as well as setting up home later amidst the verdant greens. Jin Leng is working on a new series of acrylic works on the Dance Of The Gopis.Yeoh Jin Leng is one of the few Malaysian artists left trained in the rigours of the classical British tradition, Chelsea no less from 1957 to 1961. This poetic painting presents a powerful abstraction of natural motifs infused with velocity of movements, focusing on the spatial interaction of forms with colour. The composition is an integration of dense elements utilising broad gestural brushwork combined with soft brushing of layers in an emotive colour palette of blue, green and pink, each stroke portraying individual weight and volume. Nature serves as a dominant inspiration for Yeoh Jin Leng, whose work expresses concerns for the environment from an ecological point of view, reflecting lush tropical terrains and visual cultures of Southeast Asia.   Yeoh Jin Leng received his training education at Kirkby, Liverpool in 1953 and was the First Malaysian Federal Scholar of Art who furthered his art studies at the Chelsea School of Art, London, United Kingdom and London Ministry of Education, London University. Yeoh Jin Leng is a pivotal figure in the realm of Malaysian art - a painter, academician, potter, writer, administrator, and thinker - a sophisticated Malaysian abstract expressionist pioneer. Deriving from "the moving and complex" Icon series as described by the late Tan Sri Zain Azraai,Icon III depicts a pair of symbolic shapes that emulate the silhouette of totemic figures - a simplified and progressive version of his earlierEcology series inspired by the environment and Iban tribe in Sarawak - applied in pastel palette with swift successive brushstrokes. The Icon series was then developed into a body of work titled Earthscapes - the display consisted of slabs of clay in which its surface is densely articulated and was intended to be viewed as pictures. An exemplary of the artist's visionary thinking, Icon III was conceived based on "nature, the human figure and forms which symbolise world-views of traditional communities in Southeast Asia". Yeoh Jin Leng attended the Malaysian Teachers' College, Kirkby, Liverpool in 1952 and was enrolled to the Chelsea School of Art from 1957 to 1961 as the First Malaysian Federal Scholar for Art.
