      • Cheung Pooi Yip (b. 1936 - 2019) Through The Woods, 1995
        Aug. 25, 2024

        Cheung Pooi Yip (b. 1936 - 2019) Through The Woods, 1995

        Est: RM3,000 - RM5,000

Self-taught, versatile and humble, Cheung Pooi Yip's dedication to his art reached its zenith when he was awarded a Retrospective in 2014 by the Penang State Art Gallery.Through The Woods is a reflection on the forest landscape, dominated by the vertical tree trunks and soft wispy shades of the leaves. The forest floor is shaped by a mixture of diagonal lines that creates an interesting effect. Born in Penang, he moved to Sungai Petani to take care of the family frame-shop business, which was only good to get by. But he keeps up a disciplined regime of painting, exploring and experimenting with techniques in his studio and has become known for his patternised dry brush strokes with parallel lines as forms in the 1980s, and with later use of palette knife. His favourite angle is the aerial or angled perspective. Though he delves mostly into abstracts, his earliest works were of squat figures typical of the time. In 1981, he won 1st Prize in the Bata national art competition. In later years, Pooi Yip enjoys going on painting trips with his groups of artists friends in Europe and Asia, with his wife in tow.

        Cheung Pooi Yip (b. 1936 - 2019) Boulevard Taipei, 2008

        Est: RM2,500 - RM4,500

In Boulevard Taipei, Pooi Yip shows the daily life of the bustling city with lively strokes to convey a sense of fleeting movement. The scene is enlivened with delightful details: tall building structures and people in motion. An elegant palette of delicate colours was used to portray the cityscape, infused with a warm light that gently illuminates the streets and crowd. Born in Penang, Cheung Pooi Yip moved to Sungai Petani to take care of the family frame-shop business, which was only good to get by. CHEUNG POOI YIP : Landscape, 1999

        Est: RM5,000 - RM9,000

Cheung Pooi Yip is noted for his constant use of bold colours, jagged and rough lines, as well as irregular rhythms in his painting. This time, he depicts a scene at a park, where the trees are green and freshl. Although different from usual and common depictions of sceneries, especially one quite as calming as a park, this piece is distinctively Cheung Pooi Yip, with haphazard brush strokes and colours thrown it to give that truly exclusive attribute. Born in Penang in 1936, Cheung Pooi Yip moved to Kedah, where he improved and refined his talent and skills in painting. Despite having no formal training in art, he aspired to become an artist. However, he became a frameworker instead due to the economy, while producing artworks at the same time. After emerging in the local art scene in 1961, his paintings were selected for Singapore’s local artists’ annual show. Since then, he has been participating in plenty of exhibitions, gaining recognitions and awards.

CHEUNG POOI YIP : Street Scene, 1995

        Est: RM6,600 - RM10,000

Born in Penang in 1936, Cheung Pooi Yip moved to Kedah as a child and has since lived in Sungai Petani. Although a professional frame maker, he also produced artwork. His frame making business also led him into association with two prominent Penang artists at the time, Datuk Chuah Thean Teng and Tan Choon Ghee, who inspired his own work. His main mediums are oil and acrylic. Cheung emerged in the local art scene in 1961 when his paintings were selected for the Singapore Local Artists Annual Show. Cheung’s artworks document the everyday lifestyle of people around him and nature. There is a heavy presence of vertical and horizontal lines in his urbanscapes, which emphasises the inorganic buildings in contrast with the organic figures. Cheung Pooi Yip had his first solo show in Penang in 1981, and went on to exhibit internationally in China, Jordan, and Singapore as well as Malaysia.
