JAN PAUWEL GILLEMANS II (Flemish, 1651-1704) and possib

      Est: $3,000 - $5,000

JAN PAUWEL GILLEMANS II (Flemish, 1651-1704) and possibly JAN PIETER YKENS (Flemish, 1673-1740) Classical Landscape with Putti and Garlands Oil on canvas 24-1/4 x 29 inches (61.6 x 73.7 cm) PROVENANCE: Private Texas collection. Many thanks to Fred G. Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague, for endorsing an attribution to Gillemans, and possibly Ykens (who contributed the figures), on the basis of high resolution photographs. Jan Pauwel Gillemans the Younger was born in Antwerp and trained as a still life painter both by his father and Joris van Son. He became a master of the guild there in 1674, and in 1675 was fined in Middelburg for practicing his craft without being inscribed by the guild. Although he does not reappear in the Antwerp records before 1693, he was probably active in his hometown in the 1680s since several works in Antwerp inventories from that period list works by both the younger and elder Gillemans. In 1702 he was admitted to the guild at Middelburg but shortly afterwards moved to Amsterdam, where according to biographer Weyerman, he drowned in a canal. Although he produced fruit pieces of various types in the style of his father, which ultimately derive their inspiration from the work of Jan Davidsz. de Heem, Gillemans II apparently took the innovative step of placing some of his fruit displays in landscape or architectural settings--such as in the present work. He frequently collaborated with artists who specialized in figure painting, including Jan Pieter Ykens, who supplied spirited putti and other staffage to enliven his more ambitious compositions.
